Episode 148, “Past × And × Future,” aired in September 2014 and closes out the Election Arc, ending on Gon and Ging’s conversation atop the World Tree. In manga terms, that covers through Chapter 339. Chapter 338 and 339 are the last chapters the anime adapts; nothing from Chapter 340 onward made it into the show.

What Volume Should You Buy?

If you’re reading physically, the chapter falls in Volume 32, which VIZ compiles as Chapters 331 through 340. That’s worth being precise about: most of Volume 32 — Chapters 331 through 339 — is material the anime already covered. Chapter 340, the last chapter in the book, is the only genuinely new content in that volume. If you want zero overlap, Volume 33 (which picks up at Chapter 341) is where the anime-adjacent material actually starts in full. Buying Volume 32 isn’t wrong, just know you’re paying for nine already-familiar chapters to get the one new one.

Do You Need to Restart From Chapter 1?

No, not to continue the story. Chapter 340 picks up exactly where the anime left off, and nothing about reading it requires revisiting the earlier arcs.

Starting from Chapter 1 is still worth considering for a different reason: Togashi’s original manga differs from the anime in pacing, some scene structure, and art, and plenty of readers prefer experiencing his version directly rather than as a refresher. That’s a matter of preference, not a requirement — treat it as optional, not a prerequisite for following the plot.

What Happens After the Anime

Kept spoiler-light and limited to setup, not events: the story moves into the Succession Contest, centered on choosing the next ruler of the Kakin Empire. It plays out aboard the Black Whale, a massive ship carrying the imperial family toward the long-rumored Dark Continent — the setting the entire series has been building toward since its earliest chapters. It’s a large-scale arc by the manga’s usual standards: dozens of characters, multiple factions with competing agendas, and new abilities introduced as the story goes.

Kurapika takes on a much larger role here than in earlier arcs, hired into a bodyguard position that pulls him directly into the ship’s politics while he’s still pursuing his clan’s stolen scarlet eyes. Gon, Killua, and Leorio all step back from the spotlight for a stretch as a result — a genuine structural shift from how the story has been paced so far, and one some longtime readers found jarring at first. Beyond that setup, this guide isn’t describing specific events, character fates, or reveals — those are what the arc itself is for.

How Far Ahead Is the Manga Now?

As of this writing, the newest published chapter is 420. Chapter 421 doesn’t have an announced release date yet, though creator Yoshihiro Togashi has reported finished manuscripts well beyond it. Is a New Hunter x Hunter Anime Announced?

No continuation of the 2011 Madhouse TV anime has been officially announced. Separately, a mobile game, Hunter x Hunter: Nen×Survivor, released in February 2026 with its own original animated opening — but that’s a game tie-in, not a new season of the TV series, and it hasn’t come with any announcement about the anime itself resuming.
