Start with Jurassic Park (1993)

Spielberg’s original introduces the park, the scientists and the rules of the series. It stands alone and is the film every later installment refers back to.

Then The Lost World and Jurassic Park III

The two 1990s-era sequels are the weakest link for many viewers, but they build the original characters’ story and the idea that the dinosaurs are not confined to one island. If you are short on time, the original is the one non-negotiable entry from this era.

Move to the Jurassic World trilogy

Jurassic World, Fallen Kingdom and Dominion form a connected trilogy. Dominion is a direct sequel to Fallen Kingdom, set four years later, and it brings Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard back alongside figures from the first film.

Finish with Jurassic World Rebirth

Rebirth is the seventh film and the first of a new cast and creative team, led by Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali and Jonathan Bailey under director Gareth Edwards and writer David Koepp. It is set years after Dominion, with dinosaurs surviving mostly in equatorial regions. You can follow it with only a basic knowledge of the earlier films, though Dominion explains why the animals are now spread around the world.

Where do the series and the short fit?

Beyond the films there are three optional extras:

• Jurassic World Camp Cretaceous (Netflix, 2020–2022): an animated series with five seasons (49 episodes) and an interactive special, Hidden Adventure, in November 2022. It is set before, during and after the events of Jurassic World and during Fallen Kingdom; season 2 starts about six months before Fallen Kingdom opens.
• Battle at Big Rock (September 15, 2019): a short film directed by Colin Trevorrow that follows Fallen Kingdom.
• Jurassic World: Chaos Theory (Netflix, 2024–2025): a direct sequel to Camp Cretaceous in four seasons and 39 episodes, set shortly before and during Dominion. The final season arrived on November 20, 2025.

None of the three is required to understand the movies. A full-universe marathon can slot them in around the film that overlaps each one, but the live-action sequence works fine without them.

Chronological order versus release order

The seven films play out in the order they were released. The only places where order is open to interpretation are the extras. Camp Cretaceous overlaps Jurassic World and Fallen Kingdom, while Chaos Theory overlaps Dominion. For a first viewing, watch the films in release order and add the series afterward if you want more.

Which Jurassic movies can you skip?

If you only watch a few, choose Jurassic Park, Jurassic World and Jurassic World Rebirth. If you want the story arc that Rebirth follows, add Fallen Kingdom and Dominion, since those two explain how the dinosaurs reached the mainland. • Script and cast: David Koepp has written a script, and Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali and Jonathan Bailey are expected to return. Those are reports, not studio announcements.
