Kingdom Hearts 4 Reveals Coco World, Playable Mickey and Late 2027 Release Window
Kingdom Hearts IV is targeting late 2027, with a new D23 trailer revealing a Coco-inspired world, returning Disney characters and playable Mickey gameplay.

Kingdom Hearts IV finally has a release window — and Sora is heading into the Land of the Dead.
Square Enix and Disney & Pixar Games used D23 2026 to reveal that the next mainline Kingdom Hearts game is targeting late 2027. The new showcase trailer also confirms a world inspired by Pixar’s Coco, bringing Miguel and Héctor into Sora’s next adventure.
Disney’s official D23 recap describes Coco as the first newly revealed Disney/Pixar world from the showcase and confirms that Miguel and Héctor will join Sora when the game launches. Square Enix has also published an official announcement for the late-2027 window.
Coco joins Kingdom Hearts IV
The Coco material takes Sora into the film’s vivid Land of the Dead, giving the series another Pixar setting after worlds based on properties such as Toy Story and Monsters, Inc. appeared in Kingdom Hearts III.
The D23 footage shows Sora fighting Heartless in the new environment while the wider story continues to revolve around Quadratum, the realistic city where he became stranded following the events of Kingdom Hearts III.
The game is planned for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. An exact launch date has not been announced, so late 2027 remains the official release window for now.
Mickey gets a playable storybook section
The D23 panel went beyond the shorter showcase trailer. Reuters reports that an extended four-minute version brought back Donald, Goofy, King Mickey and Hades, while also teasing Maleficent’s return.
One of the more unusual reveals was a “Paper Mickey Mouse” world. In the storybook-style section, Mickey becomes playable, with gameplay involving movement through cracks in walls, puzzle solving and even transforming into an airplane.
That gives Kingdom Hearts IV more than a new Disney world to show after years of limited updates: Square Enix is now putting a concrete launch window on the game and beginning to show how its Disney-focused gameplay will expand beyond Sora’s time in Quadratum.
Kingdom Hearts is entering a busy anniversary year
The original Kingdom Hearts launched in 2002, meaning the franchise celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2027. Disney says the series has sold more than 39 million units worldwide.
The company is also expanding Kingdom Hearts beyond games. A separate original animated series is in development for Disney Channel and Disney+, with franchise creator Tetsuya Nomura and Square Enix’s creative team involved.
For the game itself, however, the biggest update is now clear: Kingdom Hearts IV is aiming for late 2027, and Coco will be part of Sora’s next journey.
