Spoilers for Lanterns through Episode 4, “The Weenie,” only. The ending points Hal and John toward Zoe Macon as the Manhunter, then breaks their partnership: Hal jumps from their moving car and leaves John to crash. The reveal is the result of several false leads, and Hal’s action comes after both men have learned that the fight over the Green Lantern ring is more direct than either admitted.

Sinestro names the succession problem

The episode resumes Hal’s visit to imprisoned Sinestro, interrupted by Episode 3’s John Stewart origin story. Sinestro pushes Hal to say what “backup” conceals: John is meant to replace him. Sinestro suggests killing John; Hal rejects that. His former mentor also provides information about a Manhunter’s heart that may help distinguish the creature from a human impostor. Hal leaves with both a lead for the case and a sharper fear about losing the role that defines him.

Back in Rushville, John studies Will Macon’s property from a water tower. A hidden structure and the compound’s defenses suggest the Manhunter could be under Will’s protection. Hal and John bring Sheriff Kerry Kane into the plan, explaining that Antaan’s alien hunters may attack the town if they fail to identify the creature in time. Kerry agrees to help, while warning the Lanterns that they may get only one chance inside the compound.

Lianna gives John a different instruction

Guardian Lianna confronts John over his failure to report in and tells him Hal visited Sinestro, violating an oath. She instructs John to recite the Green Lantern oath the next time Hal gives him the ring; doing so would make John the sector’s Lantern. Her pressure plays directly on the childhood and ambition exposed in “OutKast.” John is angry at Hal, but when Hal later hands him the ring, John does not take that step.

That choice matters because the two can still work together. John draws a detailed plan and creates a drilling construct to get them into the Macon compound. Once inside, they find advanced weapons. A trap disables their advantage and Will’s men capture them. Will describes the unnamed benefactor who cured his cancer and helped make Rushville unusually healthy. The town’s prosperity is now tied to the same secret the Lanterns are trying to uncover.

Kerry gets Hal and John out. She tells them to stop rushing the investigation while she works on the benefactor’s identity. For a moment, the case appears to have moved from guesses to evidence. John then meets Zoe privately; she warns him to leave Rushville but will not tell him what she knows. Soon afterward, a strike from above destroys her truck. Hal sees it as an attack. John does not react as he would to an ordinary death, a difference Hal notices later.

The false trail through Hector Hammond

The orbital weapon leads them to a facility linked to Hector Hammond. There, Hector has heard John’s private conversation with Lianna and plays it back to Hal. He claims to be the Manhunter, but Hal tests that claim rather than accepting it. Sinestro’s information about a Manhunter’s heart helps expose Hector as human. Hector says his true name is Hector Gutierrez and that the Manhunter supplied technology to help his community. He points the Lanterns back toward Will Macon.

Will is an obvious suspect: he has the guarded compound, alien equipment and a benefactor he refuses to name. The episode does not, however, show Will passing Hal’s test. Hector’s statement is another lead, not a final identification. The case’s useful distinction is between someone protected by the Manhunter and the Manhunter itself.

Is Zoe the Manhunter?

On the drive back, John tells Hal he did not recite the oath when he had the ring. Hal admits visiting Sinestro and seems ready to move past the deception. Then he compares John’s cool response to Zoe’s apparent destruction with John’s immediate fear when Hector threatened his parents. Hal infers that John did not believe Zoe was dead, and that the best explanation for surviving the strike is that Zoe is the Manhunter. John says he suspected her but was not certain.

At the end of Episode 4, this is Hal’s deduction, supported by John’s suspicion; the episode has not yet shown Zoe confessing or surviving on screen. That distinction keeps the reveal at the correct spoiler boundary. It also explains why Hal feels newly betrayed: John withheld a serious lead after insisting they needed to trust each other.

Hal tells John to contact Antaan, then jumps out of their moving car. John is left in it as it crashes. Hal had refused Sinestro’s suggestion to kill his successor, but he has now put that successor in danger. His exact mix of motives is not fully explained in this episode; he is acting on anger, mistrust and the looming struggle for the ring while continuing the hunt for Zoe.

The episode ends with three live problems: John must survive the crash, Zoe’s identity still needs direct proof, and Antaan’s force is on its way into a town whose residents may be protecting the very person it seeks. Episode 5, “Lights Out,” resolves the Rushville confrontation.
