Lanterns Episode 5 Recap & Ending Explained: Why John Stewart Gives Up the Ring

Spoilers for Lanterns through Episode 5, “Lights Out,” only. John finally takes Hal’s Green Lantern ring, but returns it to Guardian Lianna minutes later. The choice comes after Zoe Macon’s death and the destruction in Rushville. He has won the succession fight that structured his upbringing, yet the result feels empty because the cost of winning has exposed what both Hal and the Guardians were willing to do.

How Zoe gained Rushville’s loyalty

The episode opens years before the 2016 crisis. A younger Kerry Kane arrives in Rushville while fleeing men sent to kill her. Zoe saves her and offers a safe new life, asking that Kerry protect her when the time comes. Zoe’s ability to heal Kerry makes the bargain tangible. This history explains Kerry’s secrecy in the present: her loyalty is not a random obstruction of the investigation, but a debt to the person who gave her refuge.

Will Macon’s cured cancer and the town’s strangely empty hospital now belong to the same pattern. Zoe did real good for particular people while building a community that would shield her from anyone who came looking. The help does not erase the atrocities described by Antaan, but it explains why Rushville is divided when the hunters arrive.

John and Hal separate

The story resumes after Hal’s car betrayal in Episode 4. John is trapped in the vehicle as it catches fire. Hal says the training is over and leaves him; his plan is to use Antaan’s hunters and Will Macon’s armed men as distractions while pursuing Zoe. Kerry warns that Zoe may destroy the town to protect herself.

John survives badly burned. Zoe heals him with her technology and offers a bargain: he should let Hal die, after which he can take the ring. She also tells him that the Guardians created the Manhunters and destroyed the others when their methods proved too brutal. That account changes the moral shape of the mission. The creature John is hunting is bound to the Guardians’ own past, not an unrelated alien invader.

John does not tell the Guardians about Zoe while he is with her. His distrust of them has grown from their concealment of the plan to replace Hal, even as he understands Zoe is dangerous. The episode makes neither side’s manipulation easy to ignore.

What happens to Will, Antaan and Zoe?

Antaan’s group attacks Will’s compound after Hal directs them there. Will tries to protect Zoe, but Antaan kills him when he realizes Will is human. Zoe then uses orbital weapons against Rushville. Buildings and residents are caught in the attack. Hal shields what he can with a ring whose charge is dwindling, then briefly restrains Zoe. She escapes amid the smoke and confusion. Antaan’s pursuit ends in an explosion; it does not stop Zoe.

The final confrontation moves to Hal’s motel. John and Hal fight over the ring. An orbital strike hits the building, and Hal uses his remaining power to protect them. John leaves the injured Hal as bait, takes a sniper position and shoots Zoe when she approaches. The scene confirms her death without turning it into a triumph: John had become close to her, and Rushville has paid heavily for the entire hunt. He cuts out her heart as proof; it crystallizes, matching the test Sinestro described.

Why does John give up the ring?

With Zoe dead and Hal conscious but pinned under rubble, John removes Hal’s ring and puts it on. He also takes the charging Lantern and Zoe’s heart to Lianna. The act completes the role his parents trained him for. It is also the moment he can finally judge that role without Hal standing between him and it.

John tells Lianna the ring made him feel empty. He has seen Hal betray his own code in order to keep it, and he no longer knows why he wanted it so badly himself. He removes the ring and leaves it with her. He is not disqualified or defeated; he refuses the job after receiving it. That distinction is the episode’s ending, and it gives John a choice neither his parents’ preparation nor the Guardians’ plan made room for.

Hal survives Episode 5, but his position as Earth’s Green Lantern is over for now. The Manhunter hunt has ended, yet the town is devastated, Kerry has lost the person she protected, and the Guardians must decide what to do with a ring neither Hal nor John is wearing. The 2026 death shown in the premiere still lies ahead. Episode 6, “Bad Optics,” returns to that future.
