Tom Skerritt Dies at 93: Alien, Top Gun and Picket Fences Actor Remembered
Tom Skerritt died October 21, 2026, aged 93. His Dallas in Alien, Viper in Top Gun and Emmy-winning Picket Fences role marked a career spanning six decades.

Tom Skerritt, the actor who played Dallas in Alien, Viper in Top Gun and Sheriff Jimmy Brock in Picket Fences, died on October 21, 2026. He was 93.
Reuters reported on October 22 that his family announced his death from natural causes. Variety subsequently confirmed the news with his publicist. The date of death was Wednesday, October 21, distinct from the later publication dates of those reports.
Dallas in Alien and Viper in Top Gun
Skerritt played Dallas, captain of the Nostromo, in Ridley Scott’s Alien (1979). The role placed him alongside Sigourney Weaver’s Ellen Ripley in the original film’s spacecraft crew. The archival image above, supplied in 20th Century Studios’ Alien gallery, shows him as Dallas with fellow crew members.
In Tony Scott’s Top Gun (1986), he played Mike “Viper” Metcalf, the senior naval aviation instructor training the pilots who include Tom Cruise’s Maverick. Dallas and Viper made Skerritt a familiar authority figure in two very different kinds of film: confined science-fiction horror and a fighter-pilot drama.
His earlier work had already demonstrated another register. In Robert Altman’s MAS*H (1970), he played surgeon Duke Forrest alongside Donald Sutherland and Elliott Gould. In Robert Redford’s A River Runs Through It (1992), he portrayed the Presbyterian minister who is father to the characters played by Brad Pitt and Craig Sheffer.
His Picket Fences Emmy
Television gave Skerritt a sustained leading role as Sheriff Jimmy Brock in David E. Kelley’s CBS series Picket Fences, which ran from 1992 to 1996.
The Television Academy’s record confirms his 1993 Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for that performance, followed by another nomination in 1994. Its biography also records his appearances in Cheers and Brothers & Sisters, alongside a film career extending well beyond Alien and Top Gun.
Reuters reports that Skerritt was born in Detroit on August 25, 1933, served in the US Air Force and made his film debut in War Hunt (1962). In their statement, his family remembered his humor and curiosity, his generosity and his commitment to creativity and helping others find their voices.
Those recollections accompany a body of work that moved between ensemble films, major supporting parts and a television lead. His familiar screen authority belonged to a career spanning more than six decades.
