Valheim Deep North Prep Guide — What to Bring, Build and Finish Before the 1.0 Update

Deep North is Valheim's final 1.0 biome, gated behind Ashlands. Here's what to actually finish, craft and stock up on before heading north — and what's still unconfirmed by Iron Gate.

Deep North is Valheim’s final 1.0 biome, and it doesn’t ease you in — it’s gated behind Ashlands, the game’s previous endgame region. If you’re about to make the trip, here’s what’s actually worth finishing and packing first. Our 1.0 save-compatibility guide covers whether to start a new world; this is about what to bring once you’re ready to sail north.

Progression Point: Beat Fader First

Iron Gate’s own 1.0 material confirms Deep North as the new endgame biome added with the update, but the developer hasn’t published a step-by-step preparation guide of its own — everything below beyond the biome’s existence is drawn from what players have actually found since the September 9 launch, not from Iron Gate directly. Worth being upfront about that distinction before relying on any of it.

With that caveat: Deep North sits after Ashlands in the progression order. Fader, the Ashlands boss, needs to be dead before Deep North is realistically survivable. Trying to push north without having cleared Ashlands first is going in badly underprepared — the biome’s enemies and hazards are built around a character who’s already finished the previous endgame content.

Armor and Weapons Worth Bringing

Go in with your best fully-upgraded Ashlands-tier gear. Deep North has its own crafting progression once you arrive, but nothing in that new gear is available before you get there — you’re relying on what you already have for the initial push. Flametal armor is the commonly cited safe pick for players running a conventional one-handed weapon and shield setup; two-handed options and bow builds have their own established Ashlands-tier picks. The specific “best” loadout is going to vary by playstyle more than any single guide can promise, so treat “bring your strongest, fully upgraded Ashlands gear” as the reliable core of the advice rather than any one specific weapon name.

Food and Meads

Bring your strongest available food buffs and healing meads — nothing new here changes Valheim’s existing food logic, it just raises the stakes on getting it right. Deep North’s cold hazard makes frost-resistance meads or gear worth prioritizing specifically, on top of whatever your usual health/stamina food setup already is.

Portals and Base Logistics

Deep North is a large, hostile new region, and establishing a portal connection back to your main base early is worth prioritizing over pushing deep immediately. Carry the materials for at least a basic portal and a small protected foothold — a simple defensible shelter — before committing to extended exploration. This isn’t a confirmed Iron Gate recommendation, just standard Valheim practice applied to a biome that’s reportedly punishing to backtrack through on foot.

Crafting Materials to Stock Up On

Based on what players have found since launch, Deep North’s own progression revolves around a few key materials gathered on-site rather than brought from home: Frostcores (from the biome’s Winding Tunnels dungeons), materials harvested from Gammeltrolls that get smelted into further crafting resources, and Ice for cold-related crafting. What’s worth bringing in rather than finding on-site is a Grappling Hook — crafted from Mistlands materials, using a Hook obtained from a Dvergr Treasure Chest in a Mistlands Infested Mine — since it’s reportedly necessary for navigating the biome’s vertical dungeon spaces. Craft it before you leave if you don’t already have one.

What Not to Overprepare For

Don’t sink excessive time into stockpiling Deep North-specific crafting materials before you’ve even arrived — a meaningful chunk of what the biome needs is gathered on-site as part of its own progression loop, not something you can front-load from home. Similarly, don’t treat any single “best weapon” callout as gospel; Iron Gate hasn’t published official loadout recommendations, and player-sourced gear advice this early after a launch is worth treating as a reasonable starting point rather than a locked answer. The genre of guide most likely to age badly right now is a hyper-specific “optimal build,” simply because ten days of collective player experience is not the same as a settled meta.

What’s Confirmed vs. What’s Still Player-Sourced

Confirmed by Iron Gate: Deep North exists as the new 1.0 biome, with new enemies including Gammeltrolls, underground Elakingar areas, Winding Tunnels dungeons, new Nord-themed gear, and a new shield and crossbow. A final boss exists in the biome.

Reported by players/specialist coverage since launch, not yet detailed by Iron Gate itself: the exact prerequisite chain (Fader → Embers → Frostcores → Bloodgold → Intricate Keys → further dungeons), and the specific gear/food recommendations above. Treat these as accurate reflections of the shipped game as players have found it, not as official developer documentation — there’s a real difference between “this is what people have found in the released biome” and “this is what Iron Gate has told us to expect,” and this guide is keeping that distinction visible rather than blurring it.
