AHS 13 Returning Characters Explained — Who's Back From Coven, Murder House and Apocalypse

Spoiler warning: this article discusses how several characters’ stories ended in Coven, Murder House and Apocalypse.

American Horror Story: 13 premieres September 24, and it’s built around a genuinely unusual promise: characters from across the anthology’s 12 prior seasons returning as themselves, not new roles for familiar faces. FX’s own July press release named seven specific returning characters. A September 10 full trailer confirmed several more — including that a few actors are playing multiple past characters apiece. Here’s who’s actually confirmed, organized by character rather than by season, and what’s still an open question.

The Coven Characters — Where This Season’s Center of Gravity Is

Coven supplies the largest single block of confirmed returns, which tracks with our watch guide already treating it as the essential pre-13 watch.

Cordelia Goode (Sarah Paulson) was Coven’s headmistress and, by the season’s end, its reigning Supreme — the most powerful witch of her generation. That’s exactly where her story left off: Supreme, in charge of Miss Robichaux’s Academy. Her return is the least mysterious of the bunch on paper, since nothing in Coven or Apocalypse removed her from that position.

Fiona Goode (Jessica Lange) is a different case. Fiona was the reigning Supreme before Cordelia, her own daughter, ultimately succeeded her — and Fiona dies at the end of Coven, killed by the Axeman in the season’s final stretch after her cancer had already been consuming her. Her season 13 return means either a flashback, an afterlife appearance, or something the show hasn’t explained yet; FX’s trailer confirms she’s back, not how.

Madison Montgomery (Emma Roberts) survived Coven and reappeared in Apocalypse, where she was resurrected from Hell and eventually reunited with the other witches. She’s the one Coven survivor on this list without a death to explain away.

Marie Laveau (Angela Bassett) was Voodoo Queen of New Orleans and Cordelia’s coven’s historic rival throughout Coven, immortal through a deal with Papa Legba. That deal was eventually broken near the end of the season — Marie’s immortality was revoked and she was killed. Like Fiona, her 13 return raises the same open question the show hasn’t answered: how a character who died in Coven is back.

Queenie (Gabourey Sidibe) survived Coven and went on to appear in Apocalypse as well, making her return the most straightforward of the group — no death to explain, no resurrection required.

Madame Delphine LaLaurie (Kathy Bates) is worth a specific caveat: she’s visible in FX’s September trailer, which is a meaningfully stronger basis than a guess, but FX and Disney’s own press materials haven’t officially named her character yet. Treat this one as very likely, not locked. In Coven, Delphine — a historical New Orleans socialite and serial killer of enslaved people — was cursed with immortality by Marie Laveau as punishment, then killed once that immortality was revoked near the season’s end. If confirmed, her return shares the same “how, exactly” question as Fiona’s and Marie’s.

The Murder House Characters

Constance Langdon (Jessica Lange) was the venomous next-door neighbor to the Harmon family throughout Murder House’s original run, with a history that predates the season itself — she’s alive at the end of Murder House, so her return doesn’t carry the same “how is she back” question the Coven deaths do.

Rubber Man, revealed in Murder House to be Tate Langdon (Evan Peters), is more complicated. Tate is already dead for the entirety of Murder House — he’s a ghost bound to the Murder House itself, and that’s true throughout the original season and into Apocalypse, where he appears again in the same house. His 13 return, at minimum, doesn’t require a new resurrection explanation the way Fiona’s or Marie’s does, since being a ghost was already his baseline state.

The Apocalypse Character

Coco St. Pierre Vanderbilt (Leslie Grossman) is an Apocalypse original — introduced there as a shallow socialite before being revealed as a witch partway through the season. She survives Apocalypse, so like Constance and Queenie, her return doesn’t require explaining away an on-screen death.

Confirmed Returns From Other Seasons

A handful of confirmed characters come from installments outside Coven, Murder House and Apocalypse — worth knowing about even though they’re outside this article’s main focus:

• Sister Jude (Jessica Lange), from Asylum — one of Lange’s four confirmed roles this season.
• Elsa Mars (Jessica Lange), from Freak Show — Lange’s fourth confirmed role.
• Twisty the Clown (John Carroll Lynch) and Paul the Illustrated Seal (Mat Fraser), both from Freak Show.
• Kai Anderson (Evan Peters) and Winter Anderson (Billie Lourd), both from Cult.
• James Patrick March (Evan Peters), from Hotel — the trailer’s most newsworthy addition, since he delivers the trailer’s key line, “It’s witch-hunting season.”

Between Lange’s four characters and Peters’ three, this season is treating both actors as genuine “greatest hits” showcases rather than single-role returns.

What’s Still Unconfirmed — Don’t Get Ahead of the Casting

FX has confirmed several more actors for the season without confirming which character each one plays. Resist the temptation to guess based on casting history alone:

• Frances Conroy is confirmed in the cast; her specific character has not been named.
• Mena Suvari is confirmed in the cast, and her likely return as Elizabeth Short (the Black Dahlia) has been widely reported — but every outlet reporting it, including this one previously, has hedged it as unconfirmed. The full trailer didn’t resolve it either.
• Jamie Brewer is confirmed in the cast; whether that means a return as Coven’s Nan, Murder House’s Adelaide Langdon, or a new character hasn’t been stated.
• Joey Pollari is confirmed in the cast without a stated character.

The Bottom Line

This is less a spinoff of any one prior season and more a genuine crossover — Ryan Murphy’s “it’s like the Avengers” framing turns out to undersell it slightly, given how many of these characters died on screen in their original seasons. FX hasn’t explained how Fiona, Marie Laveau or (if confirmed) Delphine LaLaurie are walking around again, and that mechanism — not just who’s back — is likely to be part of what the premiere actually has to answer.
