Mark Hamill Cast as Darkwing Duck in Disney+ Revival

Mark Hamill will voice Drake Mallard, better known as Darkwing Duck, in a new Disney+ series, according to TheWrap. Seth Rogen is the new Launchpad McQuack, Lizzy Caplan voices Gosalyn Mallard and Lilimar plays a rebellious teenager named Duckie.

The September 22 report resolves the biggest question left by original Darkwing actor Jim Cummings in August: Disney’s long-developing project is moving ahead with new voices for both Darkwing and Launchpad. It does not yet resolve how this version fits with either the 1991 series or the 2017 DuckTales continuity.

Disney has not announced a premiere date or episode count through a directly accessible first-party release. Mark Hamill replaces Jim Cummings as Darkwing Duck

Cummings originated Drake Mallard in the 1991 animated series and later returned to the role in the 2017 DuckTales. In August, he told Collider that he had recorded a pilot for the new project several years earlier but Disney was hiring different actors for Darkwing and Launchpad.

TheWrap now identifies those replacements as Hamill and Rogen. The report does not say why the earlier version changed direction, and there is no basis for treating the recasting as a firing or assigning a motive to Disney.

Hamill is a prolific voice actor as well as the actor behind Luke Skywalker, with the Joker among his best-known animated roles. Rogen is also an executive producer through Point Grey Pictures alongside Evan Goldberg, James Weaver, Alex McAtee and Gabby Grantham.

Sean Tretta and Borja Peña Gorostegui are executive producers on the series. Stones, who created the original Darkwing Duck, consulted on the project.

The character names establish who is in the show, but not which newcomers are heroes or villains. TheWrap’s report does not provide descriptions for Glade McTowers, Rosa, Firecracker, Timb, Pondsy, Officer Shanks or Officer Webb.

What the new premise says about continuity

The reported official logline says Darkwing has spent 35 years trapped in an alternate world where nobody knows about his superhero exploits. Duckie, a teenager who knows his heroic past, pulls him back into action.

The story brings back familiar allies Launchpad, Gosalyn and Morgana, along with enemies including Negaduck and Megavolt. That clearly draws on the original show’s cast and history. It still does not tell us whether every event from the 1991 series remains canon, or whether the alternate-world device gives the writers room to reinterpret it.

The report calls the project a continuation, but neither it nor the logline establishes a connection to the DuckTales series that ran from 2017 to 2021. That version treated Darkwing as an in-universe television character before introducing a real Drake Mallard and its own takes on Gosalyn and Negaduck.

Until Disney publishes a fuller continuity explanation, the safest answer is that the new series uses the legacy Darkwing Duck characters and a 35-year time gap, while its relationship to the two previous animated continuities remains unconfirmed.

When is the Darkwing Duck revival coming to Disney+?

There is also no trailer. The first-look image shows an updated Darkwing design between Hamill and Rogen, but it does not establish the final animation style for a full episode or reveal how the rest of the cast will look.
