Diablo Is Getting an Animated Netflix Series — Here's What Blizzard Actually Confirmed

Blizzard confirmed at BlizzCon 2026 that Diablo is heading to Netflix as an animated series. That’s the real, official news. Almost everything past that — when, who’s making it, which game it draws from — is still unknown.

What Blizzard actually announced

Blizzard’s own wording, from its BlizzCon 2026 materials: “After decades of bringing entire universes to life through our games, we’re partnering with some creative powerhouses to tell even more stories beyond gaming across new screens. A new animated series set in the world of Diablo is in development with Netflix.” Blizzard president Johanna Faries delivered the news on stage, telling the crowd directly: “We are thrilled to share that we are in development on a new animated series for Diablo with Netflix.” Both statements say the same thing: this is a real, confirmed project, and it’s explicitly animated, not live-action. Netflix has not yet published its own separate announcement or project page.

What “set in the world of Diablo” does and doesn’t tell us

That phrase confirms the Sanctuary setting and nothing more specific. Blizzard has not said the series adapts Diablo I, II, III, IV, or the newly announced Diablo V — nor has it described an original story disconnected from any specific game. Don’t assume this ties into Diablo V’s own storyline just because both were announced at the same event; Blizzard has kept the two projects entirely separate in its own materials.

The details that remain unknown

As of this announcement, Blizzard and Netflix have not revealed:

• A release date or release window
• An animation studio
• A showrunner, writer or director
• Any cast, voice or otherwise
• An episode count or season order
• Which characters, era or storyline the series covers

Faries also mentioned, in the same appearance, that adaptations of other Blizzard franchises — Overwatch and Warcraft among them — “could” happen down the line. That’s a tease about future possibilities, not an announcement of any specific project; treat it as exactly that level of confirmed.

Why this is being called “back in development”

This isn’t Netflix and Blizzard’s first attempt at a Diablo adaptation. Netflix was reportedly working on anime-style adaptations of both Diablo and Overwatch back in 2018–2019, with Nick van Dyk — then co-president of Activision Blizzard Studios — confirming the Diablo project had reached pre-production. Those plans stalled after Activision Blizzard sued Netflix over the alleged recruitment of its then-CFO, Spencer Neumann, a legal dispute that damaged the companies’ working relationship and left both projects shelved. This new BlizzCon 2026 confirmation is the first sign since then that a Netflix Diablo project is actively moving forward again — which is the honest way to describe it, rather than treating it as a brand-new idea with no history.

How this differs from Diablo V

Red Reactions has separately covered Diablo V’s first confirmed classes, also announced at BlizzCon 2026. That’s a mainline game, targeting a Spring 2029 release, with confirmed classes and gameplay systems. The Netflix series is a different medium entirely — animated television, not a game — and Blizzard has given no indication the two projects share a story, timeline, or release schedule. Searching for one doesn’t get you information about the other.

The bottom line

Diablo’s Netflix series is real, it’s animated, and it’s actively in development after years of a prior attempt sitting dormant. That’s the entire confirmed picture right now.
