Dungeon Crawler Carl Books in Order: Standard Paperbacks vs Deluxe Edition
The eight Dungeon Crawler Carl novels in reading order, plus the practical differences between the standard first paperback and the November 2026 deluxe hardcover.

Start Dungeon Crawler Carl with the novel of that name, then read Carl’s Doomsday Scenario and continue in numbered order. Matt Dinniman’s series is a continuing story: a new cover or deluxe binding for book one is an alternative edition of the starting novel, not the next installment.
As checked on 11 October 2026, Penguin Random House’s series guide lists eight novels, ending with A Parade of Horribles. The first book also has a deluxe hardcover scheduled for 17 November 2026. That future edition is a preorder at this guide’s publication, so it is not the same buying proposition as a standard paperback you want to start reading now.
Dungeon Crawler Carl reading order
| Order | Novel |
|---|---|
| 1 | Dungeon Crawler Carl |
| 2 | Carl’s Doomsday Scenario |
| 3 | The Dungeon Anarchist’s Cookbook |
| 4 | The Gate of the Feral Gods |
| 5 | The Butcher’s Masquerade |
| 6 | The Eye of the Bedlam Bride |
| 7 | This Inevitable Ruin |
| 8 | A Parade of Horribles |
This is the main novel sequence, not a list of editions. Ace published A Parade of Horribles on 12 May 2026. Its position as the eighth listed book does not mean the series is complete.
For a first-time reader, book one is the useful test purchase. The premise involves Carl and his cat, Princess Donut, surviving an elaborate dungeon spectacle. Its LitRPG framing uses game-like systems within a novel; these listings are books, not a playable game. Reading later-volume descriptions before starting can reveal developments the early books build toward.
Standard paperback vs deluxe hardcover
The main distinction is an ordinary reading copy versus a more elaborate physical edition of the same first novel. The deluxe’s production features may matter to a collector or gift buyer. They do not change where it belongs in the reading order.

Different pagination is not evidence that one contains a different numbered novel. Those figures describe the specific publisher editions above; a retailer may group other formats on the same product page.
Ace’s deluxe listing names Victo Ngai for the cover and interior illustrations. Its announced extras include decorated endpapers, a maze on the hardcover case, art inside the jacket, stenciled edges, a ribbon bookmark and an in-character Q&A with Princess Donut. These are concrete reasons to consider the edition if the physical presentation matters to you.
The publisher lists the deluxe at US$65 as of this check. That is its list price, not a promised retailer price, discount or delivered total. The purchase links should be used to check the current offer and regional shipping.
Is the bonus story exclusive to the deluxe?
No: part one of “Backstage at the Pineapple Cabaret” is also advertised with the standard print edition. The standard first-book page identifies that bonus material, and the deluxe page lists it too. Do not pay for the deluxe solely on the assumption that this particular bonus part is absent from the ordinary paperback.
If you already own book one, compare the deluxe’s stated physical extras with what you want from a second copy. “Deluxe” does not automatically mean a revised core story, an additional numbered volume or all bonus material from the series in one binding. Buy the specific contents described by the publisher rather than treating the label as a guarantee of everything.
Which edition makes sense for a new reader?
Choose the standard paperback if your main aim is to find out whether the series works for you. It gives you a clear starting point without making a collector’s edition the entry requirement. Choose the deluxe hardcover if you specifically want the announced artwork and bookmaking details and are comfortable waiting for its scheduled release.
After book one, continue with Carl’s Doomsday Scenario. Neither the deluxe nor the standard hardcover needs a separate place between novels. If you switch from print to audio or ebook midway through the series, match the novel title and sequence number before worrying about matching a set’s cover design.
For either purchase, confirm the selected format in the retailer’s product details. A search for a print ISBN can still open a grouped listing with audio selected. The two links above were checked against their respective paperback and deluxe hardcover ISBNs; current prices and delivery dates can change.
