Marvelous used today’s Nintendo Direct to reveal Eternal Anima, an original turn-based JRPG built around memory-reading and combat prediction, launching worldwide March 4, 2027 on Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. It’s also the game previously known only as PROJECT LIFE is RPG, the working title Marvelous teased back in 2023 — Marvelous’ own announcement explicitly confirms Eternal Anima is that project, not a separate title.

The Story, Without Spoilers

Marvelous’ official premise: “Yearning for a better future is considered a capital offense in the kingdom of Urvis Ael. After Wade questions this key tenet of his society, he finds himself on the run in an era-spanning adventure.” Urvis Ael is described as a floating kingdom — the last bastion of civilization in a world consumed by ocean. After being branded a heretic, Wade throws himself into the Forbidden Sea and journeys through the past and present of four lost continents. That’s the confirmed setup; Marvelous hasn’t detailed who or what opposes Wade beyond his own society’s law, or how the story actually resolves.

Psychometry: Reading the Past to Build Your Present

Wade’s core ability is Psychometry — Marvelous describes it as letting him “decipher past memories that dwell within objects, and inherit Abilities and Classes in combat.” In practice, that means investigating historical events through the memories embedded in objects Wade encounters, and gaining new combat Abilities and Classes tied to whoever those memories belonged to. Marvelous hasn’t detailed how many Classes exist, whether they can be freely swapped mid-battle, or whether inherited Abilities are permanent once unlocked — treat those as open questions rather than assumed mechanics.

Future Sight: Predicting the Battle Before It Happens

The game’s combat twist is Future Sight, which Marvelous describes as letting Wade “predict when enemies will act and what the outcome will be each turn.” It’s a turn-based system, not real-time — Marvelous doesn’t call it an ATB system or compare it to any other franchise’s combat. The confirmed loop is prediction-based: see what an enemy is about to do and its likely result, then respond accordingly within that same turn-based structure. Beyond that framing, Marvelous hasn’t published exact mechanical detail on how far ahead predictions extend or what specific counterplay options exist.

Who’s Making It

Director Katsuhisa Higuchi, story concept writer Keisuke Makino, and scenario writer Kazushige Nojima are the credited leads, per Marvelous’ own announcement. Marvelous describes the visual style as evoking late-1990s and early-2000s JRPGs while using modern HD-2D-style presentation — several outlets covering the reveal have drawn the same HD-2D comparison independently, though Marvelous doesn’t use that exact term itself.

Physical Editions and the Switch 2 Format Question

Both platforms get a Standard and a Limited Edition. On PS5, Standard runs $49.99 and Limited Edition $79.99; on Switch 2, Standard is $59.99 and Limited Edition $89.99. The Limited Edition adds a two-disc original soundtrack, nine character cards with an acrylic display stand, and an art book on top of the base game.

Worth confirming before you pre-order based on older format assumptions: RPG Site’s reporting states plainly that “the physical Switch 2 edition is a full release on cartridge, and not a Game Key Card” — a genuine, complete copy of the game on the cartridge itself, not a download-code-on-a-card release.

What’s Still Unconfirmed

Marvelous hasn’t detailed English or Japanese voice cast specifics, the full scope of Wade’s Class system, how many playable party members exist beyond Wade, or plot details past the initial heresy/exile setup. Today’s reveal established the premise, core systems and release date — the rest is still ahead of March.
