The Next Saw Movie Has a Director — but Saw XI Is Not Its Official Title

Mike P. Nelson will direct the next Saw movie, according to Deadline’s September 24 report. Lionsgate and Blumhouse Atomic Monster are making the film, with original Saw creators James Wan and Leigh Whannell involved as producers. The production package is concrete; the movie’s official title, cast and release date are still unannounced.

Who Is Making the New Saw Movie?

Nelson directed The Domestics, the 2021 Wrong Turn and Silent Night, Deadly Night. Deadline names Gregory Weidman and Geoff Tock as the screenwriters. Wan, Jason Blum and Whannell are producing, while original franchise producers Mark Burg and Oren Koules are among the executive producers.

Wan directed and co-wrote the 2004 original with Whannell. Their involvement on this film is as producers; the announcement does not say Wan is directing or Whannell is writing this new screenplay. Nelson is the announced director, and Weidman and Tock are the announced writers.

Is It Officially Saw XI?

No official title has been announced. This would follow ten released feature films, so “the eleventh Saw movie” can describe its place in the series. It is not confirmation that Lionsgate will market it under the title Saw XI. The announcement also does not settle whether the story continues an existing timeline, starts over, or takes another route.

Nor has the studio confirmed a plot, a production start, Tobin Bell’s involvement or a theatrical date. Those details need separate announcements.
