The official Day Drinker account has announced that the film’s teaser arrives September 24, 2026. Its September 23 post names Johnny Depp, Madelyn Cline and Penélope Cruz and includes a 19-second preview. That short clip is an announcement for the coming teaser, not the full teaser itself. Lionsgate has scheduled the film for theaters on March 26, 2027.

What the short preview shows

The official post uses tarot-card imagery and quick glimpses of Depp in character. It sets an ominous tone and gives the date of the next piece of footage, but it offers little of the film’s narrative. The cards and rapid cuts are marketing images; they do not establish supernatural events or reveal what happens to the characters.

The announced September 24 teaser should give viewers a clearer look at the film. Until then, the studio’s released story description is the reliable guide to the premise.

What is Day Drinker about?

Lionsgate’s synopsis follows a bartender on a private yacht, played by Madelyn Cline. She encounters a mysterious guest aboard the vessel, played by Johnny Depp. The two become entangled with a criminal figure played by Penélope Cruz and discover a connection neither expected. That is the publicly stated setup; the studio has not laid out the full nature of that connection or the outcome of the criminal plot.

The yacht setting matters to the pitch because it brings the bartender and stranger into the same confined world before the criminal complication enters. Beyond that starting point, it would be premature to assign motives or allegiances to any of the three leads from a few seconds of preview footage. Even the film’s title does not, by itself, explain who the mysterious guest really is.

Marc Webb directs from an original screenplay by Zach Dean. When Lionsgate announced the start of production in April 2025, it also named Manu Ríos, Arón Piper, Juan Diego Botto and Anika Boyle in the supporting cast. The studio’s first-look photograph from that announcement showed Depp with long gray hair and beard, wearing a dark suit and holding a drink. That image is a character portrait, not a scene that clarifies the plot.

The production brings together Thunder Road’s Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee, Adam Kolbrenner and Dean as producers. Lionsgate is presenting the film in association with 30West. Those credits explain the team behind the movie without implying that Day Drinker shares a story or continuity with any of their earlier work.

Depp and Cruz are working together for a fourth film

Day Drinker reunites Depp and Cruz after Blow (2001), Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011) and Murder on the Orient Express (2017). It is their fourth feature together. Their roles here are distinct from those previous pairings: the announced synopsis places Depp as the enigmatic guest and Cruz as a criminal figure, with Cline’s bartender at the center of their encounter.

That reunion is useful context for the casting, but the September 23 preview does not show enough to judge the characters’ relationship. The official teaser may add details when it arrives; the synopsis does not say whether Depp’s guest and Cruz’s character begin as allies, adversaries or something else.

When does Day Drinker release?

Lionsgate has set a March 26, 2027 theatrical release. The date appears in reporting on the studio’s schedule and in its 2026 CineEurope presentation. It is the movie’s cinema date, separate from the September 24, 2026 teaser launch. No streaming release date has been announced in the sources reviewed here.

For now, the next confirmed milestone is the September 24 teaser. It may show more of the three leads, but the announcement alone offers no basis for further plot claims.
