Nintendo Switch Sports Resort: All 12 Sports and Local/Online Play Rules
The full Switch Sports Resort roster, Wuhu Island exploration and Island Crown explained. Check local play, eight-person Friend Lobby, online membership and Switch 2 requirements.

Nintendo Switch Sports Resort is announced for October 22, 2026, exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2, with twelve sports and Wuhu Island exploration. Nintendo lists one to four players on one system, while online limits depend on the mode. In particular, a private Friend Lobby holds up to eight people, rather than sixteen.
This guide uses Nintendo’s October 16 sports preview and current US product listing. It explains the announced rules ahead of release; it is not a review or a claim of hands-on play.
All twelve sports, with Nintendo’s stated controls
Nintendo groups Thumb Wrestling and Skateboarding as new, with the other ten described as returning sports in its preview.
| Sport | What Nintendo’s preview describes |
|---|---|
| Thumb Wrestling | Pin the opposing thumb for three seconds |
| Skateboarding | Joy-Con 2 mouse controls for movement, grinds and tricks |
| Power Cruising | Steer on the water and twist the controller to boost |
| Archery | Aim arrows while accounting for wind |
| Bowling | Throw and add spin with controller movement |
| Table Tennis | Quick racket exchanges |
| Boxing | Different punches to work toward a knockout |
| Prop Plane | Tilt to fly, roll and shoot balloons |
| Tennis | Use a controller as a racket |
| Volleyball | Bump, set and spike |
| Basketball | Dribble, pass and shoot |
| Golf | Adjust the shot and swing toward the hole |
Jump Rope is a warm-up, not a thirteenth full sport. The twelve-sport total also does not mean every sport is available in every competitive mode.
Wuhu Island exploration and Island Crown
Nintendo’s September update describes free exploration, dolphin chases, hidden hibiscus flowers and collectible Spocco Photos. The game offers travel by Power Cruiser, skateboard and Prop Plane, giving land, sea and air routes around the island.
Island Crown is an offline, single-player-focused mode. The product listing specifies nine sports for progressing toward Island Champions and Island Legends, including Mii character Matt. That nine-sport competition is a subset of the overall roster, not a contradictory total for the game.
Nintendo also describes Spocco Points, earned through play and spent on character cosmetics. Players can customize a Sportsmate or Mii and obtain further options through the Item Center. These are the publisher’s announced systems, without an assessment of their pacing or balance.
Local play, online play and the eight-person lobby
| Setup or mode | Announced limit or requirement |
|---|---|
| One-system offline play | 1–4 players; check the chosen sport’s setup |
| Online, overall store metadata | 2–16 players across supported modes |
| Private Friend Lobby | Up to 8 people, with up to 2 on each system |
| Casual Online Play | Nine sports; Nintendo Switch Online required |
| Pro League | Ranked online competition |
The broad 2–16 label is not a promise of sixteen friends in one private lobby or sixteen players in every sport. Nintendo gives the private-lobby limit separately.
Online features require internet access, a Nintendo Account and a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership. Nintendo states that membership and features are not available in all countries. GameChat also carries those requirements; a compatible USB camera is required for its video features.
What hardware do you need, and when does it release?
This is a Nintendo Switch 2 game, rather than an announced original-Switch release. Nintendo’s June announcement describes Joy-Con 2 motion controls, while the October preview specifically identifies mouse use for Skateboarding.
Additional accessories may be required for multiplayer and are sold separately. Nintendo advises using wrist straps and leaving enough space for motion-controlled play. Check the chosen sport’s controller requirements rather than assuming one setup covers every activity.
October 22 appears on the checked US listing and Nintendo’s Malaysian announcements. Those sources do not establish an identical unlock minute, local edition or retailer availability in every territory. The release calendar records the announced date and platform without adding a worldwide clock or an unverified regional price.
