Monster Hunter Wilds Switch 2 Prologue Demo: Save Transfers, Local Co-op and What You Can Play
The free Monster Hunter Wilds Prologue Demo on Switch 2 covers Chapter 1-3, supports local co-op and carries progress into the December 4 full game. Here's what is—and is not—included.
— Capcom's October 20 press release and Nintendo's October 28 regional notice confirm demo content, offline-only limitation, local wireless play, save transfer and December 4 Switch 2 release. Regional eShop availability can differ.

The free Monster Hunter Wilds Prologue Demo is available on Nintendo Switch 2. It includes character creation, the opening story through Chapter 1-3, “To the Forest,” and local wireless multiplayer for up to four Switch 2 players. Demo progress carries into the Switch 2 full game, which Capcom has dated for December 4, 2026. The demo does not support online multiplayer.
Those are the practical limits confirmed by Capcom’s October 20 announcement and Nintendo’s October 28 explanation. This is a source-based guide, not a hands-on review or performance test. Capcom also featured the Switch 2 demo in an October 29 recorded showcase; that broadcast is not a new release-date announcement.
What is actually in the free demo?
| Feature | Confirmed Switch 2 Prologue Demo status |
|---|---|
| Story | Prologue through Chapter 1-3, “To the Forest” |
| Character creator | Create and customize your Hunter and Palico |
| Combat | Try all 14 weapon types, Focus Mode and Focus Strike |
| Early monsters | Nintendo highlights Chatacabra and Quematrice |
| Multiplayer | Offline local wireless play, up to four Switch 2 systems |
| Online multiplayer | Not supported in this demo |
| Save transfer | Hunter, equipment, progress and option settings carry into the full Switch 2 game |
Nintendo also describes NPC support hunters: during a quest you can send a distress signal to bring in computer-controlled assistance. That is not the same as inviting remote players into an online lobby.
The demo is a slice of the beginning of the finished game, not a special stand-alone challenge with a separate story. Its Chapter 1-3 stopping point is important: screenshots or late-game monster lists from the complete game do not show that those encounters are playable here.
Can you play with friends without going online?
Yes, locally. No, not over the internet. Nintendo states that the demo allows wireless local multiplayer for up to four players. Each participant needs their own Nintendo Switch 2 console with the demo installed. Four people sharing one console is not what the announcement promises.
Nintendo describes the demo as offline-only, with no online multiplayer or Photo Mode. The full Switch 2 version, by contrast, will offer online play, including cross-platform online multiplayer according to Capcom. Do not treat the full game’s cross-play promise as a feature that already works in the demo.
If your group is in different cities, this particular free trial is not a way to hunt together remotely. If you are in the same room with separate Switch 2 systems, local wireless play is the supported multiplayer option.
Will your Hunter and equipment transfer on December 4?
Yes. Capcom says your progress from the Prologue Demo carries into the full Monster Hunter Wilds release on Switch 2, allowing the adventure to continue rather than restarting from the character creator.
Nintendo specifies that your Hunter, collected equipment and configured options can be retained. Keep the demo’s save data on your Switch 2; the publishers have not provided a basis here for promising cross-platform transfers from this demo to PlayStation, Xbox or PC. Follow the full game’s on-screen save-import instructions when it launches rather than relying on unverified transfer menus.
Capcom has announced the December 4, 2026 full-game launch for Switch 2. Exact local eShop availability, pricing and the start of any digital offer should be checked in the official store for your country. An eShop listing in one territory does not establish identical availability worldwide.
How does this differ from the 2027 Ascendance expansion?
The Prologue Demo tests the opening of the base game. Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance is a separate expansion announced for 2027, with Master Rank content and the Boost Bracer system. Capcom says the expansion is coming to Switch 2 as well as other supported platforms, but its new Boosted Actions should not be mistaken for mechanics playable in the free Prologue Demo.
For the actual expansion features, see our Ascendance extended-trailer breakdown. Its artwork is used above as clearly identified franchise archive, not falsely presented as a frame from the Switch 2 trial.
Capcom is also bringing a different Monster Hunter game to phones: our Monster Hunter Outlanders guide explains the mobile title. For another look at Capcom’s Switch 2 support, see the Resident Evil 2, 3 and 4 Switch 2 release guide.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Monster Hunter Wilds Switch 2 demo free?
Yes. Capcom calls it a free Prologue Demo. Look for the Switch 2 demo in the Nintendo eShop in a supported region, not the paid full-game preorder listing.
How far does the demo go?
Through Chapter 1-3, “To the Forest.” It includes the opening story and character creation; Nintendo and Capcom have not presented it as access to the entire game.
Can two people play on one Switch 2?
The official local multiplayer description requires a separate Switch 2 and demo installation for each player. It does not advertise split-screen play on one device.
Will the demo save work on PC or PlayStation?
The verified promise is that Switch 2 demo progress carries into the Switch 2 full game. Do not assume cross-platform save import. The full game’s online cross-play is a different feature.
Does the demo include Ascendance?
No. Ascendance is a separate expansion planned for 2027. Its Boost Bracer and Master Rank additions are not part of this opening-story demo.
