Star Trek: Starfleet Academy returns to Paramount+ in March 2027 for its second and final season. The streamer announced the month at its October 10 New York Comic Con panel, alongside guest roles for Bill Nighy and Rosemarie DeWitt.

Paramount’s announcement gives a premiere window, not an exact day. The final-season designation also predates this panel: the new information is the March timing and the casting details.

When and where will Season 2 premiere?

For US viewers, Paramount+ is the announced home. The panel announcement does not provide a complete territory-by-territory schedule, so it should not be treated as confirmation of a Swedish release date or the same local service everywhere.

The next useful scheduling update will be the exact premiere day and episode timetable. A month alone does not establish a weekly release pattern, a full-season drop or a local unlock hour.

Who are Bill Nighy and Rosemarie DeWitt playing?

Both actors have guest-starring roles, with family connections to established characters:

ActorCharacterConfirmed connection
Bill NighyNyk AkeEstranged father of Captain Nahla Ake, played by Holly Hunter
Rosemarie DeWittLaytha SadalTarima’s mother and the First Lady of Betazed; Tarima is played by Zoë Steiner

TVLine’s panel coverage confirms those pairings. The identities explain where the guests fit into the cast, but do not establish how either family relationship will develop or how many episodes the actors will appear in.

What is the second-year story?

Paramount’s synopsis follows the cadets into their second year aboard the USS Athena. Rivalries, diplomatic negotiations and a competitive schoolwide tournament will test their relationships and judgment. A mysterious new cadet introduces questions with implications beyond the school.

That is the announced setup, rather than a description of resolved storylines. It leaves the tournament’s outcome, the newcomer’s significance and the effect of the two family arrivals open.

For background on the ship and the show’s setting, Paramount+‘s earlier series guide describes the Athena’s connection to Starfleet Academy’s San Francisco campus. That guide includes Season 1 finale spoilers.

Is the final-season news new?

The ending decision was already public in March 2026. SYFY Wire reported the CBS Studios and Paramount+ statement on March 23, including the showrunners’ confirmation that they were working on the second and final season.

October’s announcement narrows when that season will arrive. It is not a newly announced cancellation or evidence of a third-season renewal.

Can you watch the NYCC preview?

TrekCore reports that the first-look video was shown exclusively to the NYCC audience. A panel screening should not be confused with a verified public trailer upload.

An accessible official trailer, an exact premiere day and regional listings are the details to look for next. Follow our TV & Streaming coverage for further release announcements.
