Bloodaxe premieres on Prime Video on January 20, 2027, with all eight episodes of its first season arriving together. Prime Video announced the date and unveiled the first teaser at New York Comic Con on October 9.

The Viking drama centres on Erik Bloodaxe and Gunnhild, played by Xavier Molyneux and Jessica Madsen. Amazon’s release guide confirms a launch in more than 240 countries and territories. That is a worldwide release plan, although viewers should use their local Prime Video service for subscription and availability details.

What is Bloodaxe about?

The first season follows Erik and Gunnhild’s struggle for the Norwegian throne amid competing rulers, unstable alliances and betrayals. The announced setting is tenth-century Norway, with the conflict also drawing in neighbouring Scandinavian powers and an English king.

The premise places the couple at the centre of a wider contest for power. For viewers choosing whether to start it, that is more informative than treating the series simply as a collection of Viking battles: the official setup makes marriage, rulership and loyalty part of the conflict.

Bloodaxe draws on historical figures, but it is a scripted drama. Its synopsis and teaser should not be treated as a historical source or a promise that each event will reproduce a documented incident exactly.

Who is in the cast?

Alongside Molyneux’s Erik and Madsen’s Gunnhild, the announced first-season ensemble includes:

  • Karlis Arnolds Avots as Egil Skallagrimsson.
  • Levi Miller as Haakon the Good.
  • Rod Hallett as King Athelstan.
  • Alina Tomnikov in the roles of Greta and The Seer.
  • Sisse Marie as Queen Thyra.
  • Rune Temte as King Gorm.
  • Jesper Christensen as King Harald Fairhair.

Those names establish the principal roles announced by the studio. They do not establish which characters survive the first season or how closely individual storylines follow their historical counterparts.

Is it connected to Vikings?

Michael Hirst and Horatio Hirst are the creators, writers, showrunners and executive producers. MGM Television, part of Amazon MGM Studios, produces the series. Michael Hirst’s involvement is the direct creative connection to Vikings.

The verified announcement does not establish Bloodaxe as a sequel or another chapter of Vikings’ screen continuity. A shared creator and a related period are useful context, but neither makes a prior show required viewing.

Where can you watch the teaser?

The official NYCC press announcement links to Prime Video’s Bloodaxe teaser on YouTube. It is an introduction to the production ahead of release, not an episode available to stream.

Because the first season arrives all at once, January 20 is the release date for the complete eight-episode run rather than the start of a weekly schedule. Viewers planning to avoid spoilers should account for that full-season launch.

Has Bloodaxe been renewed?

Yes. Amazon confirms a second season is already in production in Ireland. That renewal is separate from the January 2027 launch of Season 1; no Season 2 premiere date is established in the current announcement.

The next confirmed viewing milestone is therefore the first season’s release. The renewal tells viewers that more is being made, without settling when those later episodes will arrive.
