It is a sequel to Toei Animation’s 2014 sci-fi film, and the main staff of the original, including director Seiji Mizushima and screenwriter Gen Urobuchi, are back. What is the story about?

The reported synopsis has Gabriel’s team pursuing the Fallen, deserters connected to the events of the first film, who threaten DEVA from an Earth scarred by the Nano Hazard. Plot details beyond that premise have not been confirmed in the sources we checked, so treat any deeper theory as speculation.

What to watch first

The sequel follows the 2014 film, so watching that first is the safe route:

  • Expelled from Paradise (2014): Premiered in Japan on November 15, 2014, directed by Seiji Mizushima and written by Gen Urobuchi. Its premise follows Angela Balzac, an agent of the digitized society DEVA, who is sent to a ruined Earth in a physical body to find a hacker called Frontier Setter. Aniplex of America released it in 15 U.S. theaters on December 13, 2014.
  • Resonance of the Heart (2026): Watch it after the original.

Availability of the 2014 film on streaming services varies by country and changes often, and we have not verified a current streaming home, so check your local platforms before planning a rewatch.

A tie-in to know about

A visual novel, Expelled from Paradise: The Stellar Angel, is reported for November 26 on Nintendo Switch and PC (Steam), in English and Japanese. The reports do not make it required viewing for the film.
