Watch the Final Destination movies in release order: Final Destination (2000), Final Destination 2 (2003), Final Destination 3 (2006), The Final Destination (2009), Final Destination 5 (2011) and Final Destination Bloodlines (2025). That is six films across 25 years, and release order is the safest way to see the series. Chronology only really matters in two places: Final Destination 5 is a prequel to the first film, and Bloodlines opens in 1969 before moving to 2024.

A seventh film, Final Destination 7, has a release date but no confirmed cast or story, so six is the complete list today.

Dates are US theatrical releases. Release dates in other countries can differ; Bloodlines, for example, opened internationally two days before its US debut. This guide does not check where each film streams, which varies by country.

The setup that every film repeats

Each film starts the same way: someone has a vision of a disaster, escapes it with a few others, and Death then comes for the survivors one by one through a chain of accidents. The first film follows Alex Browning, who foresees the mid-air explosion of Volée Airlines Flight 180. The series then swaps in a new set of characters and a new disaster each time: a highway pile-up in 2, a roller coaster in 3, a speedway grandstand in 4 and a bridge collapse in 5.

Because the casts mostly change, you can drop into the middle without being lost. The connective tissue is the set of “rules” the films keep adding, and the recurring presence of William Bludworth, played by Tony Todd in the earlier films and in Bloodlines.

Final Destination in chronological order

If you want the story in the order events happen, rearrange it like this:

  1. Bloodlines, 1969 opening only: a premonition at a restaurant tower sets Death’s plan in motion
  2. Final Destination 5: a prequel set before the original
  3. Final Destination
  4. Final Destination 2
  5. Final Destination 3 and The Final Destination, standalone stories you can watch in release order
  6. Bloodlines, 2024 story: Stefani Reyes investigates why her family keeps being targeted

Splitting Bloodlines is awkward in practice, because the 1969 sequence is the film’s prologue and it runs on into the present-day story. For a first watch, treat Bloodlines as a single film and leave it last.

Spoiler note for Final Destination 5: its closing moments reveal that it takes place before the 2000 film. Writer Eric Heisserer has said it was always meant to be a prequel. If you want to keep that surprise, go in blind and read this section afterwards.

Which order should you choose?

First-time viewers: use release order. The series reveals its rules gradually, and later films pay off callbacks to earlier ones. Final Destination 5 works best when its ending lands as a twist rather than as a known fact.

Rewatchers: try the chronological order above, or simply place 5 just before Final Destination. Seeing the prequel first changes how the original’s opening reads.

Short on time: Final Destination, Final Destination 2 and Bloodlines give the clearest picture of the series. The first sets up Death’s design, the second extends its rules, and Bloodlines is the newest film and the highest grossing.

Where Bloodlines fits

Bloodlines, directed by Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein, was released in May 2025 after a 14-year gap since the previous entry. It follows a 1969 premonition by Iris Campbell and, in 2024, her granddaughter Stefani Reyes, played by Kaitlyn Santa Juana. It is the sixth film, yet its opening takes place before every other entry.

It also features Tony Todd as Bludworth. Todd died in November 2024 after completing his scenes, and the film is dedicated to him. According to Wikipedia, Bloodlines grossed about $317.9 million worldwide against a $50 million budget, with the series’ biggest US opening weekend at $51.6 million. It reached home release in July 2025 and began streaming on HBO Max on August 1, 2025.

Do you need to watch every Final Destination movie?

Not strictly. Each entry is a self-contained disaster story with a fresh cast, so you can watch them out of order and still follow the plot. If you only watch three, take the first film, Final Destination 2 for how it extends the first film’s rules, and Bloodlines for the modern take on the formula. If you enjoy the premise and want another long-running horror series sorted by release, our Saw movies in order guide covers all ten films.

Final Destination 7: what is known

As of November 6, 2026, the confirmed facts are limited. Warner Bros. set Final Destination 7 for May 12, 2028, announced at CinemaCon on April 14, 2026, according to Dread Central. Lori Evans Taylor, who co-wrote Bloodlines, is writing the script. Michiel Blanchart has been reported as director, but the sources we checked disagree on whether a director is officially attached, so treat that as unconfirmed. No cast, title or plot has been announced.

If you are working through other horror franchises, our guides to the Scream movies in order, the Halloween movies in order and the Evil Dead movies in order follow the same release-versus-story format. For a series that tracks its timeline across several films, see the Smile movies watch order.
