— Films, US dates, directors and story years checked on Wikipedia (Conjuring Universe, Last Rites, First Communion pages), Variety (July 15, 2026) and The A.V. Club, November 1, 2026. Streaming not checked.

Watch the Conjuring Universe in release order: The Conjuring, Annabelle, The Conjuring 2, Annabelle: Creation, The Nun, Annabelle Comes Home, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, The Nun II and The Conjuring: Last Rites. That is nine films released between July 2013 and September 2025. Story order is different, because the prequels The Nun and The Nun II reach back to the 1950s.
A tenth film is on the way. The Conjuring: First Communion is a prequel about the early years of Ed and Lorraine Warren and is scheduled for September 10, 2027 in the US.

Conjuring movies in story order
Chronological order follows the in-universe year of each film’s main story:
| Story order | Film | Story year |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | The Nun | 1952 |
| 2 | The Nun II | 1956 |
| 3 | Annabelle: Creation | 1958 |
| 4 | Annabelle | 1970 |
| 5 | The Conjuring | 1971 |
| 6 | Annabelle Comes Home | 1972 |
| 7 | The Conjuring 2 | 1977 |
| 8 | The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It | 1981 |
| 9 | The Conjuring: Last Rites | 1986 |
Wikipedia’s franchise page uses these years for the main stories. Some films also include earlier flashbacks. Last Rites, for example, opens in 1964 before moving to 1986.
The Conjuring: First Communion: release date and what is known
The Conjuring: First Communion is the tenth film in the series and a prequel to The Conjuring (2013). Here is what is confirmed and what is only reported:
- Confirmed: Warner Bros. and New Line have scheduled it for September 10, 2027. Rodrigue Huart is directing, his feature debut, from a script by Ian Goldberg and Richard Naing. Peter Safran produces.
- Reported by the trades: Garrett Wareing and Amanda Fix play the young Ed and Lorraine Warren, replacing Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, according to Variety on July 15, 2026.
- Production: Wikipedia reports that principal photography began on July 27, 2026 in Schenectady, New York, under the working title Bridgeport. We have not seen a wrap announcement.
- Not announced: a plot synopsis, the film’s exact story year, and whether Wilson or Farmiga appear in any capacity.
Because it is a prequel, expect it to slot in before The Conjuring in story order, once an official setting is stated. Until then, its exact place on the timeline is unconfirmed.
Which order should you choose?
First-time viewers: use release order. The Conjuring introduces Ed and Lorraine Warren, and later films treat the couple and their case files as familiar. The two Nun films and the Annabelle films work as spin-offs once you know who the Warrens are.
Rewatchers: story order is a fun second pass, since it opens with the Valak origin in The Nun and ends with Last Rites. It does move the Warrens’ first appearance well into the run, so it is not the best way to meet them.
Short on time: the Warrens’ own films are The Conjuring, The Conjuring 2, The Devil Made Me Do It and Last Rites. Annabelle, The Nun and their sequels are spin-offs that you can skip without losing the main Warren story.
Do you need to watch every Conjuring movie?
No. The main Warren series is four films, and each stands up as a case-of-the-week story. The spin-offs add lore, particularly around the Annabelle doll and Valak, and our guide to Valak in the Conjuring Universe covers the demon without requiring a rewatch. The review of The Nun (2018) is a useful starting point if you are deciding whether that branch is for you.
Wikipedia lists Wolves at the Door (2017) and The Curse of La Llorona (2019) as related films rather than official installments. La Llorona features the Annabelle doll and Father Perez, so it is closest to the series, but it is not required viewing.
Was Last Rites the final Conjuring film?
It was marketed that way. Wikipedia notes that Warner Bros. described Last Rites as the final Conjuring film and that critics framed it as Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson’s last outing as the Warrens. The franchise has continued anyway, with a prequel announced in October 2025 and dated for 2027. The A.V. Club’s July 2026 coverage treated the “ending” as a marketing angle rather than a real stop.
The film earned about $499 million worldwide according to Wikipedia, the highest total in the series. Variety, writing in July 2026, put it at $487 million and the franchise’s total at $2.7 billion across nine films. Sources differ, so treat these as approximate.
A separate television series was announced for HBO Max in April 2023, with James Wan and Peter Safran as executive producers, according to Wikipedia. We have not found a title or release date. There is also an interactive game, covered in our guide to The Conjuring: Unspoken on Netflix.
