David Oyelowo and Viola Prettejohn Lead Sky’s Girl With the Dragon Tattoo Series

David Oyelowo will play journalist Mikael Blomkvist and Viola Prettejohn will play hacker Lisbeth Salander in Sky’s new The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo series. Sky announced the leads on September 24, along with an eight-part format and a planned start of filming in Lithuania in October 2026. No premiere date has been announced.

What is the new Girl With the Dragon Tattoo series adapting?

The series is based on Stieg Larsson’s first Millennium novel, not David Fincher’s 2011 film. It retains the central mystery: Blomkvist and Salander investigate the disappearance of Harriet Vanger, who vanished from her family’s secluded island home more than three decades earlier. Sky says the adaptation moves the story into the present day and explores power, secrecy and misogyny in a more connected digital world.

That is a broad creative approach, not a detailed list of plot changes. Sky has not said which individual scenes, suspects or relationships will be altered. Nor has it said this eight-part series covers the entire Millennium book sequence.

Who is writing and directing?

Reinaldo Marcus Green is the lead director and an executive producer. Andrea Harkin and Amy Neil will also direct. Amanda Coe, Steve Lightfoot and Angela LaManna are writers and executive producers. Left Bank Pictures produces in association with Jarowskij/Yellow Bird, and Sony Pictures Television handles international distribution.

Oyelowo is also an executive producer. Viewers may know him from Silo, but this casting announcement is the first confirmed look at who will play Sky’s Blomkvist and Salander. Sky has not announced the wider acting ensemble.

When and where can viewers watch it?

Sky says filming is scheduled to start in Lithuania in October 2026. That is a production plan, not a release window. There is no confirmed premiere month or year yet.

Sky has announced availability in the UK, Ireland, Italy, Germany, Switzerland and Austria. Sony Pictures Television will offer the series to international buyers, but that sales role does not confirm a streaming service or broadcaster in other territories. A US platform, for example, has not been announced in Sky’s release.

The distinction matters because earlier screen versions of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo have different casts and distribution histories. This project is a fresh television adaptation of Larsson’s novel, with Oyelowo and Prettejohn in the two lead roles; it is neither a continuation nor a television remake of Fincher’s film.
