Girls Is Returning to HBO for Five Episodes: Confirmed Cast and Production Plans
HBO confirms five new Girls episodes with Lena Dunham and returning cast. Production starts in 2027; a premiere date and release schedule remain unannounced.

Girls is returning for five new episodes, HBO announced on October 13, 2026. Lena Dunham will reprise Hannah alongside Allison Williams, Jemima Kirke, Zosia Mamet and Andrew Rannells. Production is planned to begin in 2027; HBO has not announced when the episodes will premiere.
The limited run brings back the original characters rather than introducing a replacement ensemble. The important timing distinction is that 2027 currently describes filming, not a confirmed release year.

The original HBO Max upload confirms the five-episode order and production year. It is an announcement of the return, rather than a trailer establishing a finished season or premiere date. The image at the top of this article is separately labeled archival material from the original series.
Who is returning to Girls?
HBO’s October 13 announcement names five returning performers and their roles:
| Performer | Returning character |
|---|---|
| Lena Dunham | Hannah |
| Allison Williams | Marnie |
| Jemima Kirke | Jessa |
| Zosia Mamet | Shoshanna |
| Andrew Rannells | Elijah |
That is the announced group. Adam Driver is not named in the release, which does not establish that he or any other unannounced alumnus is definitively absent. Further casting would need its own confirmation.
What is the new run about?
HBO comedy chief Amy Gravitt frames the return around the characters reaching forty, moving beyond the upheaval of their twenties. Dunham’s statement explains that revisiting the characters became meaningful to her around that same milestone.
The announcement supplies that broad direction, rather than an episode-by-episode story or detailed account of where each relationship now stands. It does not establish character outcomes, episode titles or runtimes.
Judd Apatow returns as an executive producer. Dunham also executive produces, alongside Ilene S. Landress and Michael P. Cohen. Williams, Kirke, Mamet and Rannells are co-executive producers on the new episodes.
Filming in 2027 does not mean a 2027 premiere
The original series ran for six seasons from 2012 to 2017, as AP’s announcement coverage notes. The planned production start therefore falls ten years after the original finale.
HBO has confirmed a five-episode limited return. It has not supplied a broadcast date, a weekly versus full-season streaming plan, or a country-by-country availability schedule. Those details remain separate from the production announcement; no simultaneous worldwide release should be inferred.
For now, the reliable viewing-plan answer is that the original cast’s return is confirmed, while the premiere is still to come. Follow our TV & Streaming coverage for further verified announcements.
