How Long Is Fable? Playground Confirms Main Story and Side Content Length

Playground Games says Fable's mainline story runs roughly 15-20 hours, with another 15-20 hours of side and open-world content on top. Here's what that does and doesn't tell you.

Playground Games has finally put numbers on how long Fable takes to finish, and the honest answer is that it depends on what you mean by “finish.”

At a Gamescom 2026 group Q&A attended by Polygon, associate game director Will Kennedy said the mainline quest campaign runs roughly 15 to 20 hours, with another 15 to 20 hours of side content and open-world exploration on top of that. Associate game director Craig Littler added that the game’s life-simulation systems don’t really end — players who get invested in those can, in his words, “literally play it forever.”

That’s three different answers to “how long is Fable,” and none of them is a single number you should treat as final.

How long is Fable’s main story?

Kennedy’s figure for the mainline quest content is 15 to 20 hours. That’s the estimate for players following the central story missions without detouring into Albion’s side content, similar to how a “main story only” completion time gets calculated for most open-world RPGs.

It’s worth being precise about what that number covers. It’s Playground’s own pre-release estimate, not a measured average pulled from finished playthroughs, and it applies to the central quest line specifically — not the whole game. Calling Fable “a 20-hour game” on the strength of that figure would flatten a distinction the developers were careful to draw themselves.

How long with side content and exploration?

Kennedy put the side and open-world exploration content at another 15 to 20 hours.

Add the two ranges together and you get something in the neighborhood of 30 to 40 hours, and it’s tempting to present that as Fable’s real runtime. Don’t. Both numbers are ranges, not fixed durations, and they’re not guaranteed to stack cleanly for every player. Someone who beelines the main quest while dipping into a handful of side activities along the way will land somewhere between the two figures, not automatically at the top of a combined total. Treat 15-20 and 15-20 as two separate estimates for two different ways of playing, not as ingredients in a guaranteed 30-40 hour figure.

Why Fable can go a lot longer than that

The bigger wrinkle is Littler’s comment about the game’s life systems. Fable’s Bowerstone setting is built around things like property ownership, employment, and a “Living Population” of NPCs who react to what a player does over time — systems that were already detailed at Gamescom alongside the game’s combat and morality mechanics. Those aren’t quest content with an ending; they’re ongoing systems a player can keep engaging with indefinitely.

That’s genuinely different from the mainline and side-content estimates. Open-ended doesn’t mean infinite in the sense of an endless supply of new handcrafted quests — it means the game keeps functioning as a place to inhabit after the authored content runs out. How much extra time any individual player sinks into that is entirely up to them, which is exactly why Littler framed it as something players can do rather than something the game requires.

How long will it take to 100% Fable?

Nobody has said, because nobody can yet. Fable hasn’t launched, there’s no finished playthrough data, and no completionist time has been published by Playground or tracked by third-party sites. Any specific 100% figure circulating before launch would be a guess dressed up as a fact. The only numbers on record right now are Kennedy’s two pre-release estimates and Littler’s comment about the life systems having no fixed endpoint.

When does Fable release?

Fable launches February 23, 2027, on Xbox Series X|S, PC and PlayStation 5 — the series’ first appearance on a PlayStation platform. Premium Edition owners get early access starting February 18, and the game is available through Xbox Game Pass and Xbox Play Anywhere at launch.

Fable’s Gamescom 2026 slot put it in the same window as other early-2027 releases getting length questions of their own, including Persona 4 Revival, which launches two days after Fable’s Premium Edition unlocks. You can also see the full rundown of what else Xbox announced that week at Gamescom Opening Night Live.

Until the game is actually out, “how long is Fable” has three honest answers: about 15-20 hours if you stick to the main quest, another 15-20 hours if you branch into side content and exploration, and open-ended after that if Bowerstone’s living systems hook you. That’s not the developers dodging the question — it’s what happens when a game is built to keep running after its story ends.
