Netflix Orders Manifest Spinoff Arrivals: A New Manifest Mystery

Netflix is going back to the world of Manifest.

The streamer has ordered Arrivals: A New Manifest Mystery, a new sci-fi series set in the same universe as Flight 828 but built around a new cast, a new city and a different aviation mystery.

Netflix announced the show on August 28 — 8/28, naturally — exactly five years after it revealed that Manifest would return for a fourth and final season following NBC’s cancellation.

This time, the plane actually lands. The problem is that nobody on board knows who they are.

What is Arrivals about?

The official setup starts with a mysterious plane crash-landing in Denver.

The passengers emerge alive but with no memory of their identities, where they came from or why they were on the aircraft. A young social worker and a rookie Homeland Security agent join the survivors as they try to prevent what Netflix describes as a humanity-ending catastrophe.

Along the way, the two investigators discover that they are connected to the mystery themselves.

That gives Arrivals a recognizable Manifest shape without simply repeating Flight 828.

The original series centered on passengers who remembered their lives but returned to a world that had aged five and a half years without them. The new show starts with the opposite problem: the passengers are physically present, but their own histories are missing.

Netflix has not said whether concepts such as the Callings, the Death Date or the Divine Consciousness will return. For now, the only confirmed connection is that Arrivals takes place in the same universe.

Jeff Rake is returning with two Manifest veterans

Manifest creator Jeff Rake is back as a co-creator, co-showrunner, writer and executive producer.

He is joined by Margaret Easley and Laura Putney, both longtime members of the original show’s creative team who previously served as co-executive producers. They now step up as co-creators and co-showrunners alongside Rake.

Netflix’s Jinny Howe said bringing the trio back preserves the creative continuity of the franchise while allowing the new series to introduce a fresh perspective.

Robert Zemeckis and Jack Rapke of Compari Entertainment are also executive producing, alongside Len Goldstein and Jacqueline Levine. Warner Bros. Television is producing the series.

Is the original Manifest cast returning?

Nothing has been announced.

Netflix says Arrivals will introduce new characters and new storylines, and no cast members have been revealed yet.

That means Melissa Roxburgh, Josh Dallas, J.R. Ramirez, Parveen Kaur and the rest of the original ensemble should not be treated as returning until Netflix actually says so.

Rake has said the new series is being designed to reward longtime Manifest viewers while still working for people who have never watched the original. That leaves room for connections, but it is not confirmation of cameos.

Why Netflix is returning to Manifest

The timing makes more sense when you look at how the original series performed after moving to Netflix.

According to Netflix, all four seasons have generated more than 130 million views since early 2023. Season 4 spent nine weeks on the Global Top 10 English TV chart and reached No. 1 in more than 90 countries.

That is a long tail for a series that finished in June 2023.

Manifest originally ran for three seasons on NBC before being cancelled in 2021. After the show surged on Netflix, the streamer ordered a 20-episode fourth and final season that gave Rake and the cast a chance to finish the Flight 828 story.

Five years after that rescue was announced, Netflix used 8/28 again to launch the next chapter.

When will Arrivals be released?

There is no release date or release window yet.

Netflix has also not announced a cast, episode count, director or production start date.

So despite the series order, Arrivals is still at the stage where the premise and creative team are much clearer than the production schedule.

What is confirmed is enough to define the project: a new Manifest mystery, a plane crash in Denver, passengers with total memory loss and the original show’s creator back in charge.

The Flight 828 story may be over.

The universe around it apparently isn’t.
