Are Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson Really Brothers? What They Have Actually Said

Their biological relationship has not been proven. Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson have discussed the possibility that they share a father, but neither has announced a DNA result establishing it. Their new Apple TV comedy Brothers uses that real, unresolved rumor as the starting point for a fictional story.

Where the brother rumor came from

McConaughey traced the question to a family trip to Greece. In a 2023 interview with Kelly Ripa, he recalled his mother telling Harrelson that she had “known” his father, Charles Harrelson. McConaughey and Harrelson heard a suggestive pause in the way she said it. McConaughey later said the timing seemed possible because his parents were in their second divorce around a period when Charles Harrelson was on furlough.

Those are the actors’ recollections and interpretation of an ambiguous comment. They do not establish that the two parents had a relationship, much less that Charles was McConaughey’s biological father. McConaughey told Vanity Fair in August 2026 that Harrelson believed the possibility from the start, while he did not.

Why they have not settled it with a DNA test

Harrelson told Stephen Colbert in 2023 that he wanted to take a test. He acknowledged that the answer would have different stakes for McConaughey: Harrelson might gain a brother, while McConaughey could have to reconsider what he has believed about the father who raised him. McConaughey made the same point in his earlier conversation with Ripa.

The September 2026 Brothers press tour brought the subject back without resolving it. In an August interview with both actors, Vanity Fair reported that McConaughey still had not taken a DNA test. On The Tonight Show in September, he said he did not think the claim was true, though he might eventually need to test. Harrelson continued to favor finding out. No public result has changed the status of the claim as of September 23.

Is Apple TV’s Brothers a true story?

It is based on a true rumor, not a confirmed family discovery. Apple says McConaughey and Harrelson play fictionalized versions of themselves. In the show, a remark by Matthew’s mother, Ma Mac (Holland Taylor), unsettles their friendship while Woody’s family comes to stay at Matthew’s Texas ranch. Matthew’s possible run for governor is another part of the series’ invented plot.

The real account concerns McConaughey’s mother and what she may have meant by “known.” The series’ wedding trouble, extended ranch stay and search for answers are storytelling devices; they cannot prove anything about the actors’ ancestry. Apple scheduled the eight-episode comedy to debut globally on September 23, 2026, with two episodes, followed by one new episode each Wednesday through November 4.

The answer outside the show remains open. Until the actors share a reliable test result, “possibly related” is as far as the public evidence goes.
