Metroid Ravenous Trailer Breakdown — What Nintendo Actually Revealed About Samus' New 2D Adventure
Metroid Ravenous launches January 28, 2027 on Switch 2. Here's exactly what Nintendo has confirmed about Samus' life-draining new power, the five Space Ninjas, and what's still unknown.

Nintendo revealed Metroid Ravenous during today’s Nintendo Direct, and the official product page that followed fills in far more than the trailer alone. The next 2D Metroid launches January 28, 2027, exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2, and puts Samus Aran through a new survival mechanic Nintendo describes bluntly: feed on your enemies, or don’t survive.
The Story Setup
Nintendo’s own description: after her ship crash-lands on an unfamiliar moon, Samus is ambushed by a mysterious group of assassins and left severely wounded. To find her way back to the surface, she has to make her way through an underground world and gain new abilities along the way. Nintendo hasn’t explained why Samus crashes, who sent the assassins, or what’s actually at stake beyond her own survival — this is the confirmed premise, not the full story.
Samus Feeds on Enemies to Survive
This is the trailer’s central reveal, and Nintendo’s product page states it without ambiguity: “Samus must use her latent Metroid powers to regain energy by feeding on her prey. Stun enemies by countering their attacks, then act fast to drain their energy.” That’s a specific, confirmed loop — counter an attack, stun the enemy, then drain it — and Nintendo specifically says the resource being restored is energy, not health, ammo, or an unrelated meter.

What isn’t confirmed: how much energy a given drain restores, whether specific enemies grant Samus new abilities rather than just energy, and whether the mechanic has any downside or cooldown. The marketing language — “It’s eat or be eaten,” “devour your foes” — lines up with the counter-stun-drain loop Nintendo describes, but treat that as thematic framing around a real mechanic, not evidence of additional rules Nintendo hasn’t stated.
Five Space Ninjas, Confirmed
Nintendo’s UK product page names the antagonists specifically: five Space Ninjas who ambushed Samus and now wait for her throughout the game’s underground world, fought in “thrilling one-on-one battles” described as up-close duels against their “powerful weaponry.” That’s confirmed. What isn’t: their individual names, motives, or any connection to existing Metroid factions like the Chozo, the Galactic Federation, or Space Pirates — nothing in Nintendo’s materials ties them to established lore, so don’t assume a connection based on their design alone.
Does This Follow Metroid Dread?
Neither of Nintendo’s product pages mentions Metroid Dread by name or uses the word “sequel.” Some outlets covering the reveal have editorially noted that Ravenous “seems to follow” Dread given Samus’ altered relationship with Metroid DNA after that game’s ending — worth knowing if you’ve played Dread, since it’s genuinely useful context for why Samus has Metroid-derived powers at all. But that’s an inference from series context, not something Nintendo has stated, so this guide isn’t calling it a confirmed sequel.
Developer: Still Unconfirmed
Metroid Dread was made by MercurySteam alongside Nintendo EPD. Whether MercurySteam is also behind Ravenous is genuinely unresolved — some outlets have named them, but CBR’s own reporting flagged the developer as one of the announcement’s unanswered questions, with nothing in the reveal trailer or Nintendo’s product pages confirming a studio. Treat this as unknown rather than assumed continuity.
Special Edition and amiibo
Nintendo has confirmed a Special Edition containing the physical game, a SteelBook case, and the Samus (Metroid Suit) amiibo. Two additional amiibo — a standard Samus figure and a larger Chozo Statue figure — release separately at launch. Nintendo hasn’t detailed what any of the three amiibo actually unlock in-game.
What’s Confirmed vs. Still Unknown
Confirmed: January 28, 2027 release on Switch 2 ($59.99 digital), single-player only, the moon-crash-and-ambush premise, five Space Ninjas as recurring duel opponents, the counter-stun-drain energy mechanic, the Special Edition and three amiibo.
Still unknown: the developer, any connection to Dread‘s story, the Space Ninjas’ identities and motives, exactly how much energy draining restores or whether it grants new abilities, the moon’s name, and the game’s broader map structure.
