If you own digital Minecraft for the original Nintendo Switch, Mojang says you can obtain the digital Switch 2 Standard Edition free in most territories until the end of January 2027. The offer is through Nintendo eShop, has three stated regional fee exceptions and does not establish the same entitlement for a physical cartridge owner.

Minecraft’s native Switch 2 edition has an announced October 27 launch date, but there is no single verified worldwide unlock hour. Nintendo Australia separately lists physical availability on October 27 and digital availability on October 28.

Who qualifies for the upgrade?

Mojang’s eligibility wording specifies an existing digital version of Minecraft for Nintendo Switch. Owning the console alone, or having Minecraft on an unrelated platform, is not the stated qualification.

Your situationWhat the announcement establishes
You own original-Switch Minecraft digitallyA limited digital Standard Edition upgrade offer through Nintendo eShop.
You own only the physical Switch cartridgeThe cited offer does not confirm eligibility. Do not assume a free native copy.
You are a new buyerNo free-owner entitlement is established; check the edition and local listing before paying.

Mojang names three exceptions to the free offer: 100 JPY in Japan, 30 NTD in Taiwan and 25 THB in Thailand. These are the publisher’s stated upgrade fees, rather than prices for buying the full game. Its page includes Thailand even though Nintendo Australia’s shorter disclaimer mentions only Japan and Taiwan.

Where to obtain it

The verified route is Nintendo eShop, linked from Mojang’s digital-upgrade announcement. Check the native Switch 2 Standard Edition offer against your digital ownership and account before confirming anything. Deluxe and Ultimate upgrades are separately described as discounted paid options.

If your offer differs, check the official listing for your account’s territory before buying another edition. The upgrade announcement does not specify a save-transfer procedure, so it should not be treated as a guarantee that moving existing worlds is automatic.

October 27 and October 28 are different regional dates

Source or marketAnnounced date
Mojang’s international announcementOctober 27, 2026.
Nintendo Australia, physical editionOctober 27, 2026; its current page labels physical availability as out now.
Nintendo Australia, digital editionOctober 28, 2026.

The Australian listing makes that physical/digital distinction explicit. Neither that page nor Mojang’s announcement establishes one simultaneous global release time. Check your local eShop for actual digital availability.

What the native edition changes

Mojang’s Switch 2 release announcement describes Vibrant Visuals as the default visual experience, with enhanced lighting and shadows. The Super Mario Mash-Up also receives an update for those graphics.

There are limits: Vibrant Visuals is unavailable in some gameplay, including split-screen and certain Marketplace worlds or content. That restriction concerns the enhanced visuals; it should not be read as an announcement that all split-screen play has been removed.

A native Switch 2 upgrade and playing the earlier Switch version are different propositions. The announcements do not provide measured frame-rate or resolution results, and this guide does not claim to have benchmarked the new edition.

Standard, Deluxe or Ultimate?

Nintendo Australia’s comparison lists the updated Super Mario Mash-Up in all three editions. Deluxe adds Celebration Food, Rescue Dogs and Plenty O’Blocks, three exclusive Character Creator items and 700 Minecoins.

Ultimate adds Decocraft and Weapons + Tools alongside those three add-ons, with five exclusive Character Creator items and 1,000 Minecoins. These are package contents, not a promise that either paid upgrade is necessary to obtain the Standard offer. Verify the local price and contents before choosing a collection.

Minecoins bought after the change stay within Nintendo

Mojang’s wallet notice takes effect October 27. New Minecoins purchased in Minecraft on Switch or Switch 2 can be spent only within that Nintendo ecosystem. New purchases on other devices cannot be spent on Nintendo devices.

Pre-change Minecoins move to a Legacy Wallet, remain usable across compatible platforms and do not expire. That older balance is used before newly purchased Minecoins. The notice also advises checking supported platforms on retail Minecoin cards before purchasing or redeeming them.

The wallet change does not mean every old balance disappears, nor that buying currency on another device is a way around Nintendo’s new restriction.
