Netflix Film Chief Dan Lin Exits; Peter Rice to Oversee Movies
Dan Lin is leaving Netflix Film. Peter Rice will oversee movies until a successor is named, while his wider chief content officer appointment begins October 26.

Dan Lin is leaving his role leading Netflix Film, with Peter Rice to oversee the movie division until a new head is announced, Reuters reported on October 19, citing Netflix. A permanent successor to Lin has not been named in the checked announcements.
Rice’s temporary film oversight is separate from his wider appointment as Netflix’s Chief Content Officer, which the company announced on October 15 with an October 26 effective date.
What changes, and when?
There are two leadership positions to distinguish:
| Position | Announced arrangement |
|---|---|
| Head of Netflix Film | Lin departs; Rice oversees films pending a permanent appointment, according to Reuters’ company-confirmed report. |
| Chief Content Officer | Rice succeeds Bela Bajaria, with his appointment effective October 26, 2026. |
The October 26 date belongs to Rice’s CCO appointment. The sources do not supply a separate start date for the interim movie arrangement, so it would be premature to describe him as having already begun his CCO term on October 20.
Netflix says the chief content role covers its global content organization, including scripted and unscripted series, film and live events across regions. Interim supervision of films does not make Rice the announced permanent replacement in Lin’s separate position.
What Netflix has said about Lin’s departure
TheWrap’s October 19 account includes statements from Lin and co-CEO Ted Sarandos. Lin thanked the team and filmmakers he had worked with; Sarandos praised his filmmaking standards, dealmaking and collaborative approach.
Those public comments acknowledge the departure without identifying a reason for it. The checked company material does not settle speculation about individual creative disputes or name a replacement date.
Lin took over Netflix Film in April 2024, following Scott Stuber, as TheWrap reports. His exit follows the separate announcement that Bajaria is leaving after nearly a decade at Netflix. That sequence establishes a leadership transition; it does not, by itself, explain every decision behind it.
What does this mean for Netflix movies?
The immediate confirmed change is who supervises the division while a permanent film chief is chosen. Rice’s eventual CCO remit is broader, bringing movies within the global organization he has been appointed to lead.
The departure announcements do not establish a cancellation, budget change or revised release date for any particular film. Each of those would require a project-specific announcement. A movie’s existing release plan should therefore not be rewritten simply because the executive structure above it is changing.
For now, the useful distinction is between the temporary film reporting line, the October 26 CCO appointment and a permanent film-head appointment still to come. Further strategy or slate changes remain matters for subsequent announcements.
