Keanu Reeves is attached to star in Netflix’s Maelstrom, according to TheWrap’s October 26 report, with Jaume Collet-Serra directing. Alan Ritchson was previously attached but has departed, the outlet reports. This is attributed industry reporting, rather than an official Netflix casting announcement.
The project has an unusually long paper trail: the original screenplay was sold to Warner Bros. in 1993. Its return to the news concerns a new reported lead, rather than a newly dated premiere.
What is Maelstrom about?
TheWrap’s account describes the historical script as an action thriller involving a federal agent protecting a woman threatened because of her testimony. A hurricane and pursuing attackers turn that protection assignment into a confined survival situation.
That is the reported script premise, not a final Netflix synopsis. Descriptions of the woman’s relationship to the criminal threatening her differ between reports, so they should not be combined into a more specific, supposedly confirmed plot.
What changed with the lead role?
TheWrap reports Reeves’s attachment and Ritchson’s departure. The Playlist also covers the change, citing earlier Page Six Hollywood reporting.
A reason for Ritchson leaving has not been established in the checked reporting. Suggestions about another project do not amount to a confirmed scheduling explanation.
How a 1993 script reached this stage
TheWrap identifies Greg Fitzpatrick as the original writer, Jeff Robinov as producer and Mark Bianculli as the writer responsible for revisions. Collet-Serra is the filmmaker behind Netflix’s Carry-On.
The 1993 Warner Bros. sale belongs to the screenplay’s earlier history. It should not be confused with a new Warner distribution deal, or taken as evidence that the film was already shooting decades ago.
Is there a release date or trailer?
The checked reports do not announce a premiere date, release year, verified filming start or official first look. There is no confirmed Maelstrom trailer to watch from those sources.
Reeves’s reported involvement here also does not confirm his participation in a different franchise project. Our Matrix 5 status report covers that separate film’s development questions.
