Alan Ritchson Is in Talks for Sony's Helldivers Movie — What We Know About the Adaptation

Alan Ritchson is in talks to star in Sony’s Helldivers movie following Jason Momoa’s reported exit from the project. Deadline reports Justin Lin remains attached to direct, with a deal for Ritchson not yet closed.

According to Deadline, sources say Ritchson is in talks to star in the film, based on Arrowhead Game Studios’ video game franchise, with Lin still on board to direct. Sony gave no comment when asked. If a deal closes, Ritchson would play one of the Helldivers, with the rest of the cast still to be announced. This is a negotiation, not a signed deal — Deadline’s own sourcing frames it that way, and nothing here should be read as Ritchson officially cast.

Hutch Parker is producing alongside PlayStation Productions’ Asad Qizilbash and Lin, through Lin’s Perfect Storm Entertainment. Plot details for the film remain undisclosed. Sony has set a release date of November 10, 2027.

Why Ritchson, and why now

Momoa’s exit from the project was previously reported by Deadline. Its report on Ritchson describes a possible new lead, not a completed replacement casting. Ritchson, currently starring in the fourth season of Reacher on Prime Video, would be headlining his first theatrical studio feature if the deal closes — a notable step up from a career built mostly on television. What Helldivers actually is

Helldivers is Arrowhead Game Studios’ cooperative twin-stick shooter, which debuted in 2015. Its sequel, Helldivers 2, launched on PS5 and PC in 2024 and sold more than 12 million units in its first four months — later expanding to Xbox, where Deadline notes it continues to perform well. The games put players in the boots of the Helldivers, an elite unit tasked with defending the fictional Super Earth and spreading “Managed Democracy” against alien threats, using an arsenal of exaggerated, over-the-top weaponry.

Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions previously collaborated on Uncharted, starring Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg, giving the studio prior experience translating a PlayStation-published game to film.

What’s still unknown

No deal is confirmed for Ritchson yet, and Sony declined to comment. Beyond the November 2027 release date and Lin’s attachment as director, there’s no confirmed plot, supporting cast, or how closely the film will follow the games’ premise. Treat all of that as open until Sony or Lin says more.
