Superman: Man of Tomorrow Wraps Filming Ahead of Its July 2027 Release

James Gunn has finished principal photography on Superman: Man of Tomorrow, bringing the next big-screen chapter of the DCU through its main shoot with more than ten months left before release. Gunn announced the wrap on Threads and thanked the cast and crew after a production that began in April.

One of the photos accompanying the post showed Nicholas Hoult after jumping into a lake following his final shot, which is a suitably undignified way for Lex Luthor to clock out. The other gathered members of Gunn’s production team around video village, marking the end of a shoot that has revealed just enough about the sequel to make its direction clearer without giving away the movie itself.

Principal photography is done, but the movie is not

Wrapping principal photography does not mean Man of Tomorrow is finished. Gunn and his team now move deeper into editing, visual effects, sound, scoring and the rest of post-production, while additional photography can still happen later if it is needed.

DC has the film dated for July 9, 2027, the release date announced when Man of Tomorrow was revealed last September, and there is still no announced trailer date.

The shoot moved quickly. Gunn signaled that filming had started on April 20 with a set photo containing a prison badge for “Luther, A,” a chessboard and a bag of Ruffles, then followed that in June with a glimpse of Lex’s green-and-purple warsuit. By late August, the main shoot was complete.

Superman and Lex are being pushed onto the same side

DC’s original announcement confirmed the title, release date and the return of David Corenswet’s Superman and Hoult’s Lex Luthor, but it stopped short of publishing a full plot synopsis. Since then, Variety has reported that the story forces the two enemies to work together against a much larger threat: Brainiac, played by German actor Lars Eidinger.

That changes the dynamic from Gunn’s 2025 Superman, where Lex was the person engineering much of Clark Kent’s trouble. Man of Tomorrow is not suddenly turning Luthor into Superman’s friend, but Brainiac gives the sequel a reason to put their intelligence, egos and very different ideas about protecting Earth into the same fight.

The warsuit tease matters for the same reason. All three pieces of artwork used to announce the film depicted Lex in the classic armor, and Gunn later shared a set tease of the suit during production, making it considerably harder to dismiss as a purely promotional choice.

The sequel is bringing more of the DCU with it

Corenswet and Hoult are joined again by Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, along with returning Superman cast members Skyler Gisondo, Sara Sampaio, Isabela Merced, Nathan Fillion and Edi Gathegi. Milly Alcock is also returning as Kara Zor-El after leading Supergirl, while Aaron Pierre is bringing John Stewart from HBO’s Lanterns to the big screen.

Pierre’s inclusion is a useful example of how DC Studios is connecting its film and television projects without making every story depend on another one. The expanding cast does not tell us how large each role will be, so there is no reason to guess at cameos or screen time. The confirmed picture is already busy enough: Superman and Lex, Brainiac as the reported central threat, Supergirl in the mix and another Green Lantern moving onto the movie side of the DCU.

Man of Tomorrow now has a long post-production window

The important part of the wrap news is straightforward. Man of Tomorrow has completed its main production phase while DC Studios still has substantial time before the July 2027 release.

We know who is returning, we know Brainiac has been reported as the threat that forces Superman and Lex into an uneasy alliance, and we know Gunn has finished the material planned for principal photography. What we do not have yet is a trailer, a detailed official synopsis or any reason to start filling those gaps with speculation.

For a sequel that already has Superman sharing the board with Lex Luthor, Brainiac, Supergirl and John Stewart, there is enough on the table without inventing the rest.
