Captain Marvel #1 is scheduled for May 2027, launching a new ongoing comic written by G. Willow Wilson and drawn by Rachael Stott. Marvel announced the Carol Danvers series during its Bullpen Bulletins panel at New York Comic Con on October 9, with Stephen Wacker revealing the project.

This is a new ongoing-series launch for the comics character. The announcement establishes a month and creative team, but does not supply an exact Wednesday on-sale date or a complete reading order.

Who is making the new Captain Marvel comic?

G. Willow Wilson is the writer; Rachael Stott is the artist. The publisher’s announcement, reproduced by Graphic Policy and covered by AIPT, identifies the book as an ongoing series rather than a limited event with a stated issue count.

The archival photograph above shows Wilson, the announced writer. It is a July 2018 author portrait, not a photograph taken at the NYCC reveal. Stott’s involvement covers the new comic’s artwork; the portrait should not be mistaken for its cover or a preview page.

How does Captain Marvel connect to Avengers?

Marvel says the series spins out of the upcoming Avengers run by Chip Zdarsky and Marco Checchetto, following Avengers: Armageddon. That places the announcement in Marvel’s developing Avengers publishing plans rather than making it a standalone adaptation of a screen story.

For readers following the wider team, our Avengers and Miracleman explainer covers another part of that publishing direction. The Captain Marvel announcement itself does not establish which Avengers issues, if any, will be necessary before reading the new #1. A connection between books is not yet a mandatory buying order.

Does “grounded” mean Carol loses her powers?

The announcement does not establish that. Marvel’s pitch describes Carol as grounded and points to a shadowy threat that has been assembling for decades. Those are the broad story hooks disclosed so far, not a detailed explanation of her powers, status or the threat’s identity.

It would be a leap to turn that wording into a confirmed depowering story, a permanent move away from space or a named villain reveal. Wilson and Stott’s actual first-issue solicitation and preview will be better guides to how those hooks work on the page.

When can readers get issue #1?

May 2027 is the announced window. A specific date, price, full variant-cover lineup and verified regional or digital purchasing details are still needed before building an exact release checklist. Until then, the concrete news is a new Carol Danvers ongoing, its two named creators and its Avengers connection.
