New Ghost in the Shell Anime Project Enters Production at Science SARU
A new Ghost in the Shell animation is underway at Science SARU, separate from the July 2026 TV series. Format, premiere date and sequel status remain unspecified.

A new Ghost in the Shell animation project has entered production at Science SARU. The franchise’s October 23, 2026 announcement identifies it separately from the television anime that began broadcasting and streaming in July 2026.
The official English announcement gives the production the working title Ghost in the Shell and names Shirow Masamune’s manga as its source. It does not announce a premiere date or specify whether the project is a film, television series or another format.
What has actually been confirmed?
Science SARU, which animated the 2026 television series, will handle animation production again. The news was revealed through a flyer distributed at the press preview of OPEN HOUSE at Dover Street Market Ginza in Tokyo.
The official site has published that announcement visual, shown above. Its cybernetic hands, title and production-announcement text are promotional artwork, not a trailer or a frame from completed animation.
| Question | What the announcement establishes |
|---|---|
| Is there a new project? | Yes; the franchise says production is underway. |
| Who is animating it? | Science SARU. |
| Is the title final? | Ghost in the Shell is identified as a working title. |
| Is it a movie or TV series? | The format has not been specified. |
| Does it have a release date? | No premiere date or release year is given. |
Is it a sequel to the July 2026 anime?
The announcement does not establish that. It describes a fresh creative endeavor following the 2026 TV adaptation, but supplies no storyline or explicit continuity relationship. A returning animation studio alone does not establish a narrative sequel or remake.
For comparison, the earlier television-series announcement specified a July 7, 2026 Japanese broadcast start. That date belongs to the previous production. Its cast, director and distribution arrangements should not be carried over to this new project without a further announcement.
When will release and streaming information follow?
The franchise says further information will arrive through Bandai Namco Filmworks’ official social accounts. No broadcaster, streaming service, episode count or international territory schedule is named in this announcement.
The Tokyo retail event surrounding the reveal is not a premiere date. There is also no basis here for predicting a 2027 release or presenting the previous series’ trailer as new-project footage. Our anime coverage will distinguish subsequent production news from details of the already released television adaptation.
