Grant Morrison will write James Bond: Sunbreaker for IDW Publishing, with a six-part opening adventure. Ian Fleming Publications announced the new comics partnership on October 9, naming Morrison as the writer and promising further Bond comics with IDW.

The announcement establishes the title and opening story’s length, while leaving the artist and publication schedule undisclosed.

What does Morrison promise for Sunbreaker?

Morrison’s pitch combines familiar Bond ingredients with new threats: cars, gadgets, deception and an unnamed villain inspired by current headlines. Their description places 007 in unfamiliar situations within a distorted reflection of our own world.

Bleeding Cool’s NYCC report also reproduces a convention video message in which Morrison identifies rogue AI, fake news, billionaire villains and threats to democracy as part of the contemporary setting. Those are the writer’s stated themes, rather than a detailed plot synopsis or a list of confirmed scenes.

Neither account names the central villain. There is also no basis in the reveal for identifying a particular car, gadget or returning supporting character.

Six parts, with a publication date still to come

The official wording describes Sunbreaker as the opening six-part adventure. It does not specify an issue-by-issue schedule, page counts or collected editions, and does not establish that IDW’s entire Bond publishing programme ends after six instalments.

Bleeding Cool describes a launch next year, but the checked Ian Fleming Publications announcement gives no year, month or day. An official on-sale date and regional editions therefore remain to be announced.

That distinction matters when the book eventually reaches solicitations: the length of a story tells readers its planned scope, while the release listings establish how and when they can read it.

How does IDW fit into Bond’s comics history?

Bond already has a substantial print-comics history. One earlier example is Dynamite Entertainment’s 2018 Casino Royale graphic novel, adapted from Fleming’s debut Bond novel by writer Van Jensen and artist Dennis Calero. Its cover, by Fay Dalton, is the archival book artwork shown here.

That earlier adaptation illustrates the distinction between retelling Fleming’s novels and commissioning a new 007 adventure. Sunbreaker is Morrison’s announced story for the new IDW partnership; the reveal does not set out a continuity relationship with previous Dynamite comics.

This is a comic-book publishing announcement. It supplies no news about the next Bond film’s writer, cast or story.
