Activision used part of Xbox’s Tokyo Game Show 2026 broadcast to release the campaign trailer for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, and it’s the fullest story reveal the game has gotten yet — confirming why Price is now a fugitive, who he’s forced to rely on because of it, and the identity of the campaign’s central villain.

Why Price Is on the Run

Activision’s official material confirms Task Force 141 has been disbanded in the aftermath of Modern Warfare III, following Price’s assassination of General Shepherd. Price is now a fugitive, and Ghost — one of his own former squadmates — has come to question his methods. Ghost and Gaz are specifically tasked with capturing or eliminating their former captain, putting Price at odds with people who were his allies just one game ago. CIA Station Chief Kate Laswell stays in contact with Price throughout, but Activision’s material frames her as increasingly concerned about how far he’s willing to go.

An Uneasy Alliance With a Former Enemy

The trailer’s biggest structural twist is who Price turns to instead: Valeria Garza, also known as “El Sin Nombre,” the Las Almas Cartel leader who was a central antagonist in Modern Warfare II. Activision describes the partnership as “one born from necessity,” with Price relying on a former enemy because the threat he’s now chasing is bigger than his conflict with what remains of Task Force 141. It’s a real alliance, not a trailer-only visual pairing — Activision’s own campaign material names Garza directly as part of Price’s story this time.

Korea at War, Confirmed as a Separate Front

Alongside Price’s personal story, Activision confirms a full-scale North Korean invasion of South Korea as its own campaign thread. Private Park Hyeon-jun and his squad fight to defend the collapsing front line, with joint U.S. and Republic of Korea Marine forces engaged in ground combat and amphibious operations. Activision’s own framing keeps this distinct from Price’s shadow war rather than folding it into the same storyline outright — the two threads intersect, per official material, rather than Korea simply being the backdrop to Price’s mission.

Archer Is Mads Mikkelsen, Officially Confirmed

Activision officially confirmed Death Stranding and Casino Royale actor Mads Mikkelsen as the campaign’s new antagonist, a character called the Archer, during the same TGS reveal. His in-game model was built from motion-capture and character scanning, closely matching his real appearance. Activision confirms a “catastrophic weapon of war” is being delivered specifically to the Archer, though the publisher hasn’t detailed what the weapon does or why he wants it. What the trailer does show is the Archer speaking directly to Price: “I’m gonna make you cry for mercy. When everything and everyone you care for dies in ways you can’t imagine. The things you’re gonna see.” That’s footage, not a narration confirmed elsewhere in official text, but it establishes the Archer as a threat aimed specifically at Price rather than a background antagonist tied only to the Korea storyline. Treat “the Archer” as this campaign’s confirmed villain identity, and everything about his full backstory and connection to Price beyond that exchange as still unrevealed.

What’s Visibly Shown vs. What’s Confirmed

The trailer’s footage moves through combat in multiple locations — including glimpses consistent with New York, Paris, and Mumbai alongside the Korean front — but Activision’s own material is the source for confirming Price’s fugitive status, the Garza alliance, and the Archer’s identity specifically. The trailer’s editing and quick location cuts shouldn’t be read as confirming mission order, a specific number of campaign chapters, or how the Korea and Price storylines ultimately converge. Those remain interpretation until Infinity Ward or Activision states them directly.

Release and Campaign Early Access

Modern Warfare 4 launches October 23, 2026 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. Campaign Early Access begins October 16 specifically for players who pre-order the digital Standard or Vault Edition — it’s not a blanket early-access window for every purchase method, so eligibility depends on which edition and platform a player buys.
