What to Read and Watch Before Netflix's Pride and Prejudice

Nothing older is required before Netflix's Pride and Prejudice. Here is the December 3 cast, what the 1813 novel spoils, and which screen versions are optional.

You do not need an older Pride and Prejudice before Netflix’s series. The show premieres December 3, 2026. It is a new adaptation of Jane Austen’s 1813 novel, not a sequel to the 1995 BBC serial or Joe Wright’s 2005 film. Those versions tell the same story. Watch or read them if you want the story first. Skip them if you want the Netflix series unspoiled.

The October 28 trailer report covers the preview, the dialogue Netflix has actually put on screen, and the country-date limits. This page is the order underneath that news. The September first look is the earlier stills piece. Its cast gaps are filled below.

Netflix has not said whether all six episodes arrive on December 3 or week by week, and Tudum does not publish one local unlock hour. The date is December 3 on Netflix. Streaming catalogues still vary by country.

What the new series has confirmed

Dolly Alderton wrote all six episodes. Euros Lyn directs. Emma Corrin plays Elizabeth Bennet. Jack Lowden plays Mr. Darcy. Tudum’s logline says wealthy bachelors arrive in the neighborhood, Jane falls for Mr. Bingley, and Elizabeth clashes with Darcy before family scandals make her reconsider him. That is the setup Netflix has published. It is not a chapter-by-chapter map.

Tudum’s trailer article describes the adaptation as faithful to the novel and accurate to the period, and it also says the six-episode form leaves room to go further into overlooked plotlines. Hold both halves of that sentence. “Faithful” here is Netflix’s description. It is not a promise that every scene matches the book, and the “overlooked plotlines” line is not a published list of new scenes.

Alderton and Lyn executive produce with Laura Lankester, Will Johnston and Louise Mutter for Lookout Point. Tudum says Corrin is an executive producer on the series, identified there as their first credit in that role. Lisa Osborne produces.

The wider Tudum list also names Rosie Cavaliero as Lady Lucas, Justin Edwards as Sir William Lucas, Saffron Coomber as Mrs. Hurst, James Dryden as Mr. Hurst, James Northcote as Colonel Forster and Eloise Webb as Harriet Forster. Hopey Parish and Hollie Avery are making their screen debuts, as Mary and Kitty. If a trailer recap swaps those two sisters, follow this table. It matches Tudum’s October 28 cast page and Variety’s same-day report.

Read the novel if you want the source

Pride and Prejudice was published in 1813. Elizabeth Bennet is the center of it. Wikipedia’s summary of the book puts the engine in one line: she learns what hasty judgments cost, and she learns to tell superficial goodness from actual goodness. The novel contains the full plot, including the ending. If Tudum’s “faithful” description holds, reading it first will spoil the series. That is the point of reading it first. It is not a companion that starts after the show.

The book is in the public domain. Editions differ in notes, spelling and introductions. They do not differ in the story. A modern paperback is a reading copy, not a novelization of the Netflix series, the 1995 serial or the 2005 film.

The screen versions that retell the same story

There is no watch order in the franchise sense. Each production below starts the novel again. Release order is the only sequence that exists, and only if you want all of them.

1940 film. Robert Z. Leonard directed Greer Garson as Elizabeth and Laurence Olivier as Darcy for MGM. Wikipedia records the screenplay as Aldous Huxley and Jane Murfin’s, drawn from Helen Jerome’s stage adaptation as well as the novel. It is a Hollywood telling. It is not required, and it is not the text the Netflix series is adapting from.

1980 serial. Fay Weldon adapted the novel for a five-episode co-production of the BBC and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. Elizabeth Garvie plays Elizabeth. David Rintoul plays Darcy. In the United States it aired on PBS as part of Masterpiece Theatre. Wikipedia’s summary, checked October 28, does not lock a single premiere day, so this guide does not invent one.

1995 serial. This is the six-episode version most people mean by “the BBC Pride and Prejudice.” Andrew Davies adapted it. Simon Langton directed. Jennifer Ehle plays Elizabeth. Colin Firth plays Fitzwilliam Darcy. Sue Birtwistle produced it, with the BBC and additional funding from A&E. BBC One broadcast the episodes, about 55 minutes each, from September 24 to October 29, 1995. In the United States, A&E aired them as double bills across three nights beginning January 14, 1996. Those are two different first-broadcast dates. The serial is the long television shape. It is still optional. Netflix’s series does not continue Firth’s Darcy.

2005 film. Joe Wright’s feature debut, Pride & Prejudice, stars Keira Knightley as Elizabeth and Matthew Macfadyen as Darcy. Wikipedia records a UK release of September 16, 2005, and a 127-minute theatrical runtime. The same Wikipedia page does not agree with itself on the United States day: the article text says November 11, and the infobox says November 23. This guide does not pick a US day from that conflict. The film is the two-hour route. It is not a chapter of the Netflix series.

What this order leaves out

Modern retellings, immigrant transpositions and horror crossovers are separate stories. They can be worth seeing on their own terms. They are not homework for December 3, and this guide does not turn them into a required list. The same rule covers the 1940, 1980, 1995 and 2005 versions: useful, not mandatory.

If you are sorting another Netflix book adaptation the same way, the East of Eden guide separates that series from the 1955 film. The question is the same shape. The books are not.

A practical plan for the time you have

  1. If you only want the new series: stop here. December 3, six episodes, Corrin and Lowden, and the cast table above. No older adaptation is assigned viewing.
  2. If you want the book in your head first: read the 1813 novel. Expect the ending. Then watch Netflix and see where Tudum’s “room to go further” shows up.
  3. If you want one finished screen version: choose the 1995 serial for the television pace or the 2005 film for a single evening. Do not watch either one expecting it to set up a cliffhanger the Netflix series will pay off.
  4. If you want release order: 1940, then 1980, then 1995, then 2005, then the Netflix series. Nothing in a later version depends on your having seen the previous one.
