Avengers: Doomsday Watch Order — What You Actually Need to Watch Before the Movie

You do not need to rewatch forty movies before Avengers: Doomsday. Marvel’s own synopsis describes heroes from three distinct universes on a collision course with a threat unlike anything they’ve faced — which is a lot of moving parts, but not a lot of required homework. Here’s the actual minimum, what’s worth adding, and what you can skip regardless of what the marketing implies.

Avengers: Doomsday opens December 18, 2026, directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, with Avengers: Secret Wars following December 17, 2027.

Minimum route

1. Avengers: Endgame (2019). This is the film Marvel is actively re-releasing this September — as Endgame Encore, with new footage built specifically to bridge into Doomsday — because it’s the real starting point. It’s where the era of six original Avengers actors closes out, and Doomsday has been framed by Marvel’s own marketing as the direct continuation of that story rather than a fresh start. 2. Know who Doctor Doom is. You don’t need a specific film for this — no MCU project has featured this version of the character before Doomsday itself — but you do need the character. Robert Downey Jr. plays Victor von Doom, a genius-sorcerer monarch convinced his one catastrophic failure was someone else’s fault. That’s genuinely it for the minimum. Everything past this point is added value, not a requirement.

Recommended route

3. Captain America: Civil War (2016) and Avengers: Infinity War (2018). Not required, but useful: these establish the scale and tone of “the whole roster fighting one impossible problem,” which is the exact shape Doomsday’s synopsis describes. Skippable if you just want to follow the plot; useful for tone-setting.

4. Know why Doom hates Reed Richards. Doom’s rivalry with Reed Richards is one of the oldest in Marvel Comics, and given that Pedro Pascal’s Fantastic Four are confirmed for Doomsday, the dynamic between the two men is likely to matter on screen. Read the full breakdown rather than treating this as something you need footage for — there’s no MCU film yet where Doom and this version of Reed have actually met.

5. Basic X-Men familiarity, not the old films themselves. Doomsday’s confirmed cast includes a substantial contingent of Fox-era X-Men actors: Patrick Stewart as Professor Xavier, Ian McKellen as Magneto, Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, James Marsden as Cyclops and Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler. This is very likely a multiversal appearance rather than a direct continuation of the 2000s–2010s Fox X-Men film continuity into the MCU proper — Marvel has not said these are the same characters picking up where their last film left off, or that watching those films is necessary to follow Doomsday. Knowing who these actors play and broadly what the X-Men are is enough; you do not need to marathon the Fox X-Men franchise.

What’s genuinely optional

Loki, or any other multiverse-focused Disney+ series. Multiversal mechanics are clearly part of what makes an X-Men/Fantastic Four/Avengers team-up possible at all, but Marvel has not confirmed Doomsday draws specifically on Loki’s version of multiverse rules, the Time Variance Authority, or any other show’s specific mechanics. If you enjoy that context, it won’t hurt — it’s simply not required to follow this film.

The 2000s–2010s Fox X-Men films as a full rewatch. As above: useful trivia if you want to know these actors’ full histories, unnecessary for understanding what happens in Doomsday itself.

Chris Evans and Hayley Atwell’s exact in-story return. Marvel has confirmed Chris Evans returns as Steve Rogers and Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter, which is a genuinely large deal given how Endgame left both characters. As of publication, Marvel has not explained the in-universe mechanism for either return — whether it’s a variant, a rewritten timeline, or something else entirely. Do not treat any fan theory about how this works as confirmed; there is currently nothing official to rewatch in preparation for it, because Marvel hasn’t said what it is yet.

What’s confirmed vs. what’s reasonable preparation

Confirmed by Marvel: the December 18, 2026 release date; Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom; a synopsis describing heroes from three universes on a collision course; and a cast list that includes the core Avengers roster (Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Florence Pugh, Paul Rudd and others), Pedro Pascal’s Fantastic Four (with Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as The Thing), the Fox-era X-Men actors named above, Chris Evans and Hayley Atwell, plus Simu Liu, Tenoch Huerta, Letitia Wright and Kelsey Grammer.

Reasonable preparation, not requirement: understanding Doctor Doom and the Doom/Reed dynamic, since the film’s marketing centers Doom as the antagonist. Not preparation at all: any specific fan theory about how the multiverse crossover mechanically works, since Marvel hasn’t detailed it.

The bottom line

Watch Endgame (or catch Endgame Encore in theaters) and read up on who Doctor Doom is — that’s the real minimum. Add Civil War, Infinity War and the Doom/Reed history if you want fuller context. Skip the Fox X-Men marathon, skip guessing how Steve Rogers is back, and don’t let “three universes colliding” talk you into forty hours of homework for a movie that hasn’t actually asked for it.
