Jumanji: Open World Trailer Puts the Game in the Real World Before Christmas

Sony's new Jumanji: Open World trailer is out. The US date is December 25, 2026, the UK date is December 23, and the official cast list is shorter than earlier reports.

Sony has released a new trailer for Jumanji: Open World, and the studio’s own synopsis is the part to trust first. Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black and Karen Gillan are back, and this time the game leaves the console and spills into the real world. Sony calls the film the final installment of that action-adventure trilogy.

The trailer went up on October 28, 2026, on Sony Pictures Entertainment’s YouTube channel as JUMANJI: OPEN WORLD - Official Trailer (4K). A separate Sony Pictures Entertainment India upload uses the same campaign and puts December 25, 2026 in its title. Those are two official uploads of the new preview, not a new plot announcement beyond what the film site already says.

Watch the official trailer

The embed above is the Sony Pictures Entertainment upload. The official key art shows Ruby Roundhouse, Dr. Smolder Bravestone, Professor Shelly Oberon and Franklin “Mouse” Finbar on a city street with oversized birds and holiday lights. The trailer thumbnail places the same four avatars inside a train car. Both images are the video-game characters in costume. They are current Open World art, not stills from the 1995 film.

GamesRadar+‘s October 28 report describes the preview as a Christmas-time collision: lights over a snowy city, animals in the streets, and Spencer, his mother, a younger relative and another real-world player pulled into the familiar avatars. The same report says the original four teenagers are not the ones driving those avatars this time. That is a description of the trailer, not a studio-published player chart. Sony has not posted an official list of who is inside Bravestone, Ruby, Mouse or Oberon.

A line in the preview, as relayed by ComingSoon’s trailer write-up, has Ruby warning that a loss this time leaves no home to return to: no reset and no second chance. Treat that as trailer dialogue. It is not yet a published rules change for the whole film.

What Sony has actually confirmed

The official site uses this synopsis:

This Christmas, Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Karen Gillan are reunited in Jumanji: Open World, the hilarious final installment of the globally beloved action-adventure trilogy. Our heroes have escaped the perilous jungles of Jumanji before, but this time Jumanji breaks free of its console, unleashing its chaos into our world.

Jake Kasdan directs and co-writes with Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg. The film is based on Chris Van Allsburg’s picture book Jumanji. Producers are Matt Tolmach, Jake Kasdan, Dwayne Johnson, Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia. Chris Van Allsburg is among the executive producers.

“Final installment of the trilogy” is Sony’s phrase for the Kasdan series that began with Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and continued with Jumanji: The Next Level. It does not erase the 1995 Jumanji film, and it does not turn Zathura: A Space Adventure into a chapter of this trilogy. Our Jumanji watch order separates the minimum path into Open World from the optional book, the 1995 film and Zathura.

The 2019 film already ended with game animals loose in the real world. Open World’s synopsis continues that breach. The new trailer shows the collision. It does not confirm the ending, the villain or which real-world player dies if the “no second chance” line is literal.

Who is on the current cast list

Sony’s current film site and the Sony Pictures Canada page bill:

  • Dwayne Johnson
  • Jack Black
  • Kevin Hart
  • Karen Gillan
  • Alex Wolff
  • Morgan Turner
  • Ser’Darius Blain
  • Madison Iseman
  • Nick Jonas
  • Danny DeVito

Wolff, Turner, Blain and Iseman played Spencer, Martha, Fridge and Bethany in the previous two films. DeVito played Spencer’s grandfather, Eddie. Jonas played Alex Vreeke’s avatar, Jefferson “Seaplane” McDonough. Billing means those actors are in the film. It does not by itself assign each of them an avatar in the new story.

A March 24, 2026 Variety report on the date change also named Marin Hinkle, Bebe Neuwirth, Lamorne Morris, Rhys Darby, Dan Hildebrand and Jack Jewkes. Those names are not on the cast list Sony is publishing on the film site today. Until Sony adds them back to the public billing, this article treats the shorter list as the confirmed one and the March names as an earlier trade report.

December 25 is the US date, not every country’s date

Territory checkedDateSource checked October 28, 2026
United StatesDecember 25, 2026Variety, March 24, 2026: Sony moved the film from December 11 to Christmas Day. The official site says “this Christmas” and does not restate the day.
CanadaDecember 25, 2026Sony Pictures Canada’s current page: “Exclusively in Movie Theatres December 25.”
United KingdomDecember 23, 2026Sony Pictures UK’s current page: “Only In Cinemas December 23.”
India, as titled on Sony’s channelDecember 25, 2026Sony Pictures Entertainment India’s official trailer title says cinemas on December 25. That is the channel title, not a full local-showtimes audit.

The US move was made so the film would open a week after Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part Three, both dated December 18, 2026 in North America. Those films have their own guides: the Doomsday watch order and the Dune: Part Three IMAX schedule.

Japan’s Sony Pictures press release on August 4, 2026 set a December 25 opening there and repeated a US date of December 25. No later Japanese date change turned up in the pages checked for this article. Other countries still need their own distributor listings. A US or Canadian date does not set the UK, and the UK’s December 23 does not move the US opening.

The release calendar keeps the checked US, Canadian and UK dates as separate entries.

What the trailer does not settle

Sony has not announced a runtime, a rating, an IMAX or premium-format plan, or a streaming date. Nothing in the trailer establishes that Johnson, Hart, Black and Gillan are playing new real-world people rather than the avatars. The key art labels them with the actors’ names over the avatar costumes, which is how this series has advertised Bravestone, Oberon, Mouse and Ruby since 2017.

Footage of a hippo in an alley, a train, or a holiday street is what the preview shows. It is not a scene-by-scene synopsis. The official one-paragraph synopsis remains the confirmed premise.

Dwayne Johnson is also Maui in Disney’s live-action Moana, which reached Disney+ in the United States on October 21. That is a separate film. The Moana streaming guide covers that release. Open World is his next dated Sony theatrical film in this campaign.

For the films that actually matter before opening weekend, start with what to watch before Jumanji: Open World. The short version is Welcome to the Jungle, then The Next Level. The 1995 film explains where the board came from. It is not required to follow the new trailer.
