Rupert Grint Is Returning as Ron Weasley in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child

Rupert Grint is going back to Ron Weasley.

Not for a reunion special, not for an anniversary interview and not for a five-second cameo built to make the internet lose its mind. He is actually playing Ron again.

Grint will join the Broadway production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child at New York’s Lyric Theatre for a 17-week limited run, beginning February 2, 2027 and ending May 30.

It will be his first new performance as Ron since Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 closed out the film series in 2011.

For a franchise that has spent years moving on with new casts, spin-offs and now HBO’s television reboot, this is a surprisingly old-fashioned bit of Harry Potter news: one of the original three is coming back to the role that made him famous.

The casting was announced on August 26 by the Broadway production.

Grint played Ron across all eight Harry Potter films, from Sorcerer’s Stone in 2001 through Deathly Hallows – Part 2 a decade later. He started the series as a child. This time, he is stepping into a Ron who is married, has children and has long since left Hogwarts behind.

That distinction matters because Cursed Child is not trying to recreate the movies’ school years. The play takes place after the original story and follows the older characters as their children get pulled into a new mess of their own.

Ron is still Ron, but he is not the kid making faces in the back of a flying car anymore.

Grint has spoken about the strange timing of the return, noting that both he and the character are fathers now. It is easy to see why the role would feel different to him at 38 than it did when he first walked onto a Harry Potter set.

There is also something fitting about Broadway being the place where he comes back. Grint has already worked onstage in both London and New York, including Mojo in the West End and It’s Only a Play on Broadway. This is not a film actor being dropped into theatre for the novelty of it.

No, Rupert Grint and Tom Felton are not scheduled together

The first reaction from a lot of Harry Potter fans will probably be the obvious one: if Rupert Grint is Ron and Tom Felton is already playing Draco Malfoy, are we about to get a mini movie reunion on Broadway?

At the moment, no.

Felton’s currently announced run as Draco ends on January 3, 2027. Grint starts on February 2, nearly a month later.

Unless the production extends Felton or changes the schedule, the two actors will not share the stage.

That is slightly unfortunate, because seeing the original Ron and Draco across from each other as adults would be an easy sell. Still, the bigger story is that Cursed Child has now managed to bring more than one major film actor back into the roles audiences still associate with them.

There is no announcement involving Daniel Radcliffe or Emma Watson, and nothing here should be read as evidence that either of them is next. But Grint returning does make the wall between the old film cast and the current Wizarding World feel a little less solid than it did before.

This Ron is very different from the one Grint left behind

Cursed Child picks up years after Deathly Hallows. Harry, Ron and Hermione have grown up, started families and moved into lives that look very different from the ones they imagined while they were still students.

The story largely revolves around their children, especially Harry’s son Albus and Draco’s son Scorpius, but the older generation is never far from the trouble.

For Grint, that means the return is less about trying to reproduce his 2011 performance and more about figuring out what Ron looks like after years of marriage, parenthood and ordinary adult life have happened to him.

That may actually be more interesting than a conventional movie reunion. Nostalgia can get an actor back into the costume. It cannot do much with the question of who that character became after the credits rolled.

And Ron is a particularly curious case because the films often leaned hard on his comic side. Cursed Child gives Grint a chance to revisit that humor while playing someone who is no longer defined by being Harry’s best friend at school.

The timing makes this even stranger

Harry Potter is currently heading in two directions at once.

HBO is starting over with a new television adaptation and a new cast, which means audiences are being asked to get used to another Ron Weasley entirely. On Broadway, meanwhile, the franchise is doing the exact opposite and bringing back the actor who played him for ten years.

That overlap is going to be hard to ignore.

The television series is meant to retell the books from the beginning. Cursed Child lives at the other end of the timeline. One project is introducing younger versions of these characters; the other is letting one of the original actors grow old with his.

For Grint, the Broadway run may end up being a one-off. There is no film sequel attached to this announcement and no wider original-cast reunion hiding inside it.

For now, it is simply Ron Weasley, older and back onstage with the actor who knows him better than almost anyone.

After 16 years away from the role, that gives Harry Potter fans something they have not really had since the films ended: a genuinely new Rupert Grint performance as Ron Weasley.
