Javier Bardem’s The Spread Gets HBO Series Order — Matthew Vaughn Directs

HBO has placed a series order for The Spread, a new Miami-set drama starring Javier Bardem as a billionaire trying to redraw America’s financial map.

Bardem will also executive produce the series. Matthew Vaughn is set to direct and executive produce, while Bill Dubuque and Sean Sansiveri will write and serve as executive producers. HBO announced the order on September 18 but did not disclose a premiere date or episode count.

Miami becomes “Wall Street South”

The Spread is built around Miami’s transformation into what HBO calls “Wall Street South”: a sunlit collision of hedge funds, vast wealth, nightlife and fierce competition.

Bardem’s unnamed character is described as a visionary billionaire who gathers brilliant, ambitious and dangerous people around him, then lets their appetites loose on the markets that power the country. His larger goal is to move the center of America’s economic gravity toward Miami — and retain control over the boom he helped create.

That premise gives the series a clear arena before HBO has revealed much of its cast. The money is not just background decoration; it is the force pulling talent and risk into the same city. HBO drama chief Francesca Orsi said the network had long wanted to set a scripted series in Florida and described Miami as a place of “gilded chaos.”

The announcement does not name Bardem’s character, identify any supporting roles or explain where production will take place. Those details remain open.

Vaughn directs a heavyweight creative team

Vaughn’s involvement puts the director of Layer Cake and the Kingsman films behind the camera for the new HBO drama. The network has not said how many episodes he will direct.

Dubuque arrives with extensive experience writing stories about money, power and compromised alliances, including co-creating Ozark. Sansiveri shares writing and executive-producing duties with him, but HBO has not identified one of the pair as showrunner.

The project is a co-production with FIFTH SEASON TV Studio. Brad Weston will executive produce for Makeready, with Ian Stratford and Michael Bloom executive producing for Topic Studios. Bardem’s credits in HBO’s announcement include the recent Cape Fear series and Netflix’s Monster anthology; his casting here marks the first performer officially attached to The Spread.

The order is firm; the calendar is not

HBO’s announcement is a full series order, not a pilot commitment or a report that the project is merely in development. The distinction matters because the network has already committed to making the drama, even though most of its practical details are still being kept private.

There is currently no announced premiere date, release window or episode count. HBO also has not released a trailer, first-look still or official key art. The order establishes Bardem, Vaughn, Dubuque, Sansiveri and the Miami finance premise; it does not yet provide a broader cast or production schedule.
