Jacob Tremblay plays young Ted Kaczynski, Russell Crowe plays Henry Murray, and Shailene Woodley plays fictional FBI agent Joanne Miller in Netflix’s UNABOMBER. The Harvard figures are drawn from real people; the investigation is presented through fictionalized agents. A real name on the cast list does not make every scene involving that person historical fact.

The Janus Metz film began streaming on Netflix on September 25, 2026, with a runtime of 1 hour 40 minutes. Its official trailer introduces both sides of the ensemble:

The actor–character names come from Netflix’s official cast guide. Its adaptation explainer clarifies the fictional FBI characters and speculative Harvard relationship.

Jacob Tremblay — Ted Kaczynski

Tremblay portrays Kaczynski during his Harvard years, before the crimes that made his name infamous. The real Kaczynski entered Harvard at 16, earned a doctorate and briefly taught at UC Berkeley. The film builds its earlier timeline around his involvement in Henry Murray’s psychological research.

Russell Crowe — Henry Murray

Crowe plays the Harvard psychologist directing that research. Murray’s existence and Kaczynski’s participation are separate from the movie’s specific mentor-versus-student conflict. The writers say the turns of that personal relationship are speculative, so Crowe’s character should not be treated as a transcript of private historical encounters.

Shailene Woodley — Joanne Miller

Woodley’s Joanne provides the investigation’s main point of view. Her focus on the bomber’s writing connects the procedural timeline to the younger man’s ideas. Joanne is fictional, however, and the film does not establish her as a direct portrait of one named investigator.

Annabelle Wallis — Christiana Morgan

Wallis plays Murray’s professional partner in the Harvard storyline. Morgan was a real figure, but her presence does not authenticate the film’s experimental scenes. The movie’s portrait belongs to the same dramatized setting as its Murray–Kaczynski relationship.

Alexander Ludwig — Leo Driver

Ludwig plays one of Joanne’s fellow agents, part of the smaller ensemble used to represent the investigation.

Marc Menchaca — Eddie Turrell

Menchaca plays another member of the on-screen FBI team. Eddie’s role belongs to the procedural story rather than a documented agent biography.

Steven Ogg — Dean Kaplan

Ogg plays the special agent in charge of the film’s UNABOM task force. His fictional position should not be confused with the real task force leadership described in the FBI’s firsthand retrospective.

Real people, fictional structure

The distinction is useful when moving between the film and the case record. Our true-story guide follows the historical boundaries; Kenza Benouna’s 7/10 review assesses how the performances and dual timeline work as drama.
