Blumhouse and IDW Publishing are bringing The Purge, M3GAN and Happy Death Day to comics through the horror imprint IDW Dark. The October 9 announcement puts The Purge first, in late 2027, with Dan Watters writing and Juan José Ryp drawing. The other two projects will follow, but have no announced release dates.

This is a publishing agreement for new comic stories. It does not announce a new movie, and the three books are not being presented as one connected horror universe.

The announced books at a glance

The IDW/Blumhouse statement reproduced by Capes & Tights names these projects and creators. Graphic Policy’s announcement coverage independently carries the same initial slate. Neither establishes the order of the two later books relative to each other.

The Purge leads with a new chapter

Watters and Ryp’s comic will use the franchise’s premise of a society that legalizes crime for one night each year. The announcement describes a new chapter, rather than naming an existing film whose screenplay it will retell.

Late 2027 is the available window. It does not establish an issue #1 day, a month, a page count or the length of the series. Readers looking for an orderable first issue still need the title’s solicitation and retailer details.

The image above is Universal’s archival poster for The First Purge (2018). It identifies the existing film franchise; it is not a preview of Ryp’s comic art or evidence that the new book adapts that particular installment.

Happy Death Day has a writer; M3GAN’s team is still to come

Tim Seeley is attached to Happy Death Day. The announcement identifies the franchise’s repeating-day murder mystery as the source property, but does not give this comic’s plot or its place relative to the films.

For M3GAN, the confirmed information is narrower: the AI-doll franchise is part of the deal and will receive new comic storytelling. A writer, artist and launch date have not been named in the release. No specific new setting or storyline should be treated as locked on that basis.

What does IDW Dark mean for these stories?

IDW Dark is IDW Publishing’s horror imprint. It is the publishing home for these Blumhouse projects, rather than a new film-production label.

The agreement establishes which franchises are coming to comics. It does not settle whether the stories count as film canon, continue a particular ending or share characters with one another. Those questions need book-specific descriptions or an explicit statement from the creators and rights holders.

Nor does a Happy Death Day comic confirm Happy Death Day 3, or a M3GAN comic confirm another film. Film development and this comic slate require separate announcements.

What should readers watch for next?

The useful next milestones are an official first-issue solicitation, cover and preview pages, followed by exact on-sale dates and full creative credits. Format, total issue counts, translated editions and regional digital availability remain unannounced here.

For now, the practical takeaway is one starting window: The Purge in late 2027. The other projects are announced follow-ups, without a buying calendar yet. Browse Comics News for related publishing coverage.
