D&D’s Star Wars Books Arrive in 2027: Core Rules and Tyro Squadron Explained
Wizards of the Coast has detailed two Star Wars tabletop books for 2027. Here is how Core Rules differs from the Original Trilogy-era Tyro Squadron adventure.

Dungeons & Dragons is bringing Star Wars to the tabletop in two books scheduled for 2027: D&D | Star Wars Core Rules and D&D | Star Wars, Tyro Squadron: Adventures. Wizards of the Coast revealed more about the previously announced collaboration at the Disney/Lucasfilm Publishing panel at New York Comic Con on October 9.
The useful distinction is between the rules for playing in the setting and the adventure built around a new Rebel crew. Neither book has a verified exact release date in the announcement coverage checked here.
Core Rules versus Tyro Squadron: Adventures
| Book | Announced role | Release precision |
|---|---|---|
| D&D | Star Wars Core Rules | The primary rules volume for playing Star Wars with D&D | 2027; no exact day confirmed |
| D&D | Star Wars, Tyro Squadron: Adventures | Adventures following a secret Rebel crew during the Original Trilogy era | 2027; no exact day confirmed |
These are tabletop roleplaying books, not a Star Wars video game or a new television series. The announcement separates their functions, but does not yet provide a complete purchasing checklist for a group. It would be premature to promise that one volume alone contains everything required, or to specify which existing D&D books owners must bring.
The Tyro Squadron cover above identifies the adventure volume by name and depicts armed adventurers amid familiar Imperial imagery. It helps identify the announced product; its characters and weapons are not a substitute for published character-creation rules.
When is Tyro Squadron set?
The premise places players with a secret Rebel crew during the Original Trilogy. ICv2 describes the adventure period as between A New Hope and Return of the Jedi. Wizards’ announcement frames the missions as happening while Luke Skywalker and Leia are engaged elsewhere, giving the group room to explore other corners of that conflict.
That setup establishes the campaign’s era and Rebel perspective. It does not confirm that players join Luke’s party, reenact the films or receive appearances from every familiar character. The announcement also does not settle the books’ relationship to wider Star Wars canon.
What happens next?
Wizards says more Core Rules information is coming later and points to a starfighter encounter at Star Wars Celebration in April 2027. That event preview should not be confused with a confirmed April publication date for either book.
Prices, detailed classes, Force-user rules, digital availability and precise on-sale dates remain open in the checked sources. The next useful reveal will be the actual rules and product listings, rather than assumptions based on the cover.
This project is also separate from the newly announced D&D: Dark Sun graphic novel, which adapts another setting into comics. Keep up with tabletop and video-game coverage in Gaming.
