What Happened to the Going Merry in One Piece? Its Farewell and Replacement Explained
The Going Merry rescued the Straw Hats one last time before its farewell at Enies Lobby. Here's why it could not be repaired, the exact anime episode and the ship that replaced it.

Spoiler warning: This guide reveals the Going Merry’s fate in the One Piece manga and anime, including the end of the Enies Lobby arc. It does not claim these events have happened in Netflix’s live-action series.
The Going Merry was the Straw Hat Pirates’ first ship, and it was given a farewell at sea after rescuing the crew from Enies Lobby. Its structure was damaged beyond repair, but the ship made one final journey to save its friends. Luffy then set it alight as the crew said goodbye. The decisive scene is in anime Episode 312, first broadcast in Japan on June 3, 2007, and in manga volume 44, which contains the end of the Enies Lobby story. The official episode summary and Shueisha’s official volume synopsis both confirm the farewell.
The crew’s replacement ship is the Thousand Sunny, designed by Franky. That is the short answer. The reason the Merry’s goodbye remains one of the series’ defining scenes lies in the long distance between a ship being seaworthy and a ship being treated as a friend.
What was the Going Merry, and who gave it to Luffy?
The Merry was a small sailing ship with a recognizable sheep’s-head figurehead. It originated in Syrup Village, where the shipwright and servant Merry designed it. Kaya gave the vessel to Luffy’s crew. Those details come directly from the official Going Merry profile.
It was not built to match a giant Marine warship. The Merry was instead the home in which the crew crossed the early Grand Line, fought, celebrated, recovered and learned to operate as a group. The ship’s significance is therefore tied to the earliest version of the Straw Hats, before they had a dedicated shipwright.
That history overlaps with our guide to Baroque Works and the Alabasta conspiracy. The criminal organization threatens the crew during the part of the journey when the Merry is still carrying them from island to island.
Why couldn’t the Going Merry be repaired?
The crisis becomes unavoidable in the Water 7 arc. After repeated damage and dangerous voyages, the ship’s structural condition has deteriorated beyond a repair that would make it safely seaworthy again. The problem is not simply a torn sail or a hole that can be patched. Replacing the fundamental structure would no longer mean restoring the same vessel.
That verdict leads to a painful split between Luffy and Usopp. Luffy has to think about the survival of everyone aboard; Usopp, who has spent so much time caring for the ship, cannot accept letting it go. Their disagreement is about the meaning of the Merry as much as it is about shipbuilding.
Important distinction: the later rescue does not reverse the Water 7 diagnosis. The Merry’s extraordinary last voyage is an emotional and fantastical exception within the story, not proof that its hull was secretly sound.
How did the Going Merry save the crew at Enies Lobby?
At the end of the fight to recover Robin, the Straw Hats are in danger of being overwhelmed at Enies Lobby. The Merry arrives and carries them out of the crisis, despite already being close to collapse.
The official synopsis of volume 44 specifically identifies the Merry as the vessel that saves the crew from Enies Lobby and then reaches the end of its remaining strength. The official anime Episode 312 description says the crew initially welcomes the arrival of Galley-La’s ship, only for the Merry’s hull to split in two.
The sequence matters: the ship does not break apart before completing the rescue. It carries everyone through its last assignment, then can go no farther.
Does the Going Merry really have a spirit?
The series gives the Merry an unusually personal presence, often discussed in connection with the Klabautermann: a ship spirit associated with a vessel that has been deeply cared for. Earlier in the story, Usopp witnesses mysterious repairs during the Skypiea voyage. The Water 7 arc later supplies the story’s folklore-based explanation.
The farewell goes beyond a sailor’s superstition. The publisher’s volume 44 synopsis describes the crew hearing the Merry’s voice as the ship burns. Within One Piece, that moment invites viewers to treat the ship as a companion capable of returning the affection it received.
That doesn’t mean every ship in the series has the same ability, or that the Going Merry becomes immortal. This is the particular ship’s story, and the ending is permanent.
Which episode does the Going Merry die in?
The simplest reference is Episode 312, titled in Japanese Arigatō Merry! Yuki ni Kemuru Wakare no Umi, generally rendered in English as “Thank You Merry! The Sea of Separation in the Snow.” It aired on June 3, 2007, according to the official episode listing.
| Question | Verified answer |
|---|---|
| Which anime episode has the farewell? | Episode 312 |
| When did the episode first air in Japan? | June 3, 2007 |
| Which manga volume covers the farewell? | Volume 44, Let’s Go Back |
| Where does the final rescue happen? | After the Enies Lobby escape |
| What ship comes next? | Thousand Sunny |
The manga’s volume and chapter structure should not be confused with the anime’s episode numbers. The official Episode 312 page identifies volume 44 as its source material; the entire volume covers a wider stretch of the arc.
Who builds the Thousand Sunny after the Going Merry?
Franky designs and builds the Thousand Sunny, the Straw Hats’ successor vessel. The official ship profile identifies its construction material as wood from the legendary Treasure Tree Adam and notes its cola-powered systems. Franky’s official character biography makes building and maintaining the new ship central to his role as the crew’s shipwright.
The Sunny is not a resurrected Going Merry. It is a different vessel, built for a more demanding voyage with a carpenter who can keep it functioning. Replacing the ship does not erase what the first one meant. That separation — a new beginning without undoing the goodbye — is the emotional point of the handover.
For the broader franchise beyond these arcs, our One Piece anime broadcast update distinguishes the television series’ announced schedule from its separate films and games.
Is the Going Merry still alive in Netflix’s live-action One Piece?
Yes, in the live-action story released through Season 2, the Merry is still sailing. Netflix’s March 16, 2026 Tudum recap explicitly describes the ship being freed from the whale Laboon during the crew’s entry into the Grand Line. That is much earlier in the adventure than Water 7 or Enies Lobby.
The live-action adaptation has not depicted the ship’s manga/anime farewell at that point. Its future episode-by-episode choices should not be reported as confirmed simply because readers know what happens in the source material. For a related look at the show’s Grand Line antagonists, see our Baroque Works explainer.
The same original ship has appeared in new promotional settings, including Epic’s October 2026 Fortnite × One Piece crossover. That appearance is a crossover reference to the familiar vessel, not a new plot development that reverses the original farewell.
Frequently asked questions
Did Luffy destroy the Going Merry?
Luffy sets the irreparably damaged ship on fire as a farewell, not because he has turned against it. The official volume 44 synopsis describes him making that decision after the rescue and the ship’s final breakdown.
Can the Going Merry come back?
The original ship’s voyage ends at Enies Lobby. Later artwork, flashbacks, commemorations or gaming crossovers should not be mistaken for evidence that the main story has restored it.
Was the Going Merry replaced by the Thousand Sunny?
Yes. Franky’s Thousand Sunny takes over as the Straw Hats’ ship after the Merry. It is a new ship rather than a repaired version of the old one.
Is the Netflix live-action version already at the Going Merry’s farewell?
No. The Season 2 material described by Netflix still has the Merry carrying the crew into the Grand Line. The original series’ Enies Lobby outcome is source-material spoiler context, not a verified event in the live-action adaptation.
Sources and image context
This explanation is grounded in the official Going Merry profile, volume 44’s publisher synopsis, Episode 312’s official record, the Thousand Sunny profile and Netflix’s Season 2 coverage. The hero image reuses the real ship depiction from the October 24, 2026 official Epic Games crossover teaser, with its original recorded attribution; it is archival crossover art, not a frame of the Enies Lobby funeral.
