The God Valley Incident Explained: What Really Happened in One Piece's Most Important Flashback
One Piece has now shown the God Valley Incident in full. Here's what the Native Hunting Competition was, how Rocks fell, and why the island vanished.

For over a decade, the God Valley Incident was One Piece’s most teased piece of hidden history: the day 38 years ago when the Rocks Pirates fell, Garp became the Hero of the Marines, and an entire island was erased from the map. The manga has now shown the whole thing, across an extended flashback running from chapter 1158 to chapter 1166, and the reality is considerably uglier than the legend.
This explainer lays out what actually happened, in order, as the manga depicts it. With One Piece Film God Valley arriving in summer 2027, this is the story that movie will be built on.
What God Valley was
God Valley was an inhabited island whose people refused to join the World Government. That refusal is what doomed it. Figarland Garling, the Holy Knight first introduced in chapter 1086, proposed turning the island into the venue for a so-called Native Hunting Competition: a mass hunt in which around 200 Celestial Dragons pursued roughly 100,000 of the island’s civilians, who were branded as “rabbits” and given a one-hour head start.
Garling’s motives were personal as well as political. Around 40 years ago he had fathered twin sons on the island, Shamrock and Shanks, with a local woman he later stabbed and left for dead. Before the hunt even began, he killed God Valley’s king, an early start that earned him nothing more than a penalty within the competition’s own rules.
Why the pirates came
The event was never meant to be public. A slave named Ginny leaked word of it to the journalist Morgans, and from Morgans the news reached the pirate haven of Hachinosu. Two crews converged on the island from opposite directions.
The Rocks Pirates, the most dangerous crew of the era, invaded from the south. Rocks D. Xebec came looking for his wife Eris and his son Teach, both held on the island. His crew at the time reads like a prophecy: Edward Newgate, Charlotte Linlin, Kaido, Shiki and Devil Fruit thief John were all aboard. The Roger Pirates came in from the north, and Silvers Rayleigh and Scopper Gaban pulled off the rescue of Shakuyaku, the woman Garling had arranged as the competition’s grand prize.
Monkey D. Garp arrived last, with Marine reinforcements. The manga is blunt about his reluctance: he had no interest in protecting Celestial Dragons, and only committed once he learned Roger was heading to the same island.
The hunt’s prizes, and the two fruits that changed everything
Beyond Shakuyaku, the competition’s lesser prizes were Devil Fruits. Two of them reshaped the series. Kuma seized the Nikyu Nikyu no Mi, ate it, escaped the Saint holding him and used his new paw powers to push more than 500 captives, Ginny and Ivankov among them, off the island to safety. He also teleported Eris and the infant Teach away, a quiet beat with enormous consequences: the boy would grow up to be Blackbeard.
Ivankov grabbed the other prize, the Uo Uo no Mi, Model: Seiryu, and promptly lost it to Charlotte Linlin, who passed it to Kaido. One stolen fruit at God Valley is the origin of the dragon that would one day rule Wano.
How Rocks actually fell
The legend says Roger and Garp joined forces to destroy Rocks. The manga keeps that alliance but strips out the heroism around it. The decisive intervention came from Imu, who spoke and acted through Saint Saturn and turned Rocks into a rampaging demon with a power the manga calls Domi Reversi. Kaido, Linlin and Newgate fought their own demonised captain and lost.
Roger and Garp’s combined Supreme King Haki attack is what finally broke him, and chapter 1166 gives Rocks a moment of lucidity to thank them before Garling delivered the killing blow. The man who proposed the hunt was then declared God Valley’s “champion”, while Garp was handed the Hero of the Marines title and a lie to carry for four decades.
Why the island disappeared
The cover-up was total. On Imu’s orders, Marine battleships obliterated God Valley; the island sank beneath the sea and was removed from every map. Chapter 957 established years ago that even senior Marines knew almost nothing about the incident, and the flashback explains why: the World Government was not hiding a battle, it was hiding a massacre it organised.
The aftermath scattered the survivors into the series’ future. The Rocks Pirates disbanded, Linlin left with Streusen, Newgate walked away towards the crew that would bear his name, and a young Marine named Dragon, disgusted by what he saw, took his first steps towards rebellion.
Where to read it, and what comes next
The full flashback runs from chapter 1158 to chapter 1166, available in English on Shueisha’s official MANGA Plus service, with chapters 1095 to 1097 providing the first direct glimpses. For the anime-side timeline, the TV series returns in 2027, and Toei’s theatrical Film God Valley will dramatise this incident the same year. Expect the film to make its own choices; the manga version above is the canon it will be measured against.
