Twelve days from now, Rockstar Games will make an unusually big break from its traditional GTA marketing playbook: its next Grand Theft Auto VI reveal will premiere on someone else’s platform.

Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look arrives Thursday, August 27 at 3 p.m. ET — on Netflix. Everyone else waits until 9 p.m. ET, when it hits Rockstar’s YouTube channel and the official GTA VI site. Netflix is calling it a first-of-its-kind partnership. In practice it means the biggest game marketing beat of the decade is being used as a subscription driver for a streaming service.

That’s the news. Here’s everything confirmed underneath it, with the rumours kept firmly separate.

The Netflix deal is the actual story

Rockstar’s own announcement is characteristically terse: An Extended Look premieres on Netflix on August 27 at 3 p.m. ET, and arrives on Rockstar’s YouTube channel and the GTA VI site at 9 p.m. ET the same day.

Netflix framed it more expansively, with VP of Nonfiction Series Brandon Riegg noting that GTA reveals have become cultural events in their own right and that the anticipation around VI is unprecedented.

Six hours is not a long exclusivity window, but it’s a meaningful one for a franchise whose trailers are measured in hundreds of millions of first-day views. It also tells you something about where Rockstar thinks its audience is: not on a games platform, but on the biggest general-entertainment service in the world.

Rockstar has not explained exactly what “An Extended Look” contains. Everything beyond that — gameplay demonstrations, HUD reveals, mission structure, an online announcement, or other specific features — remains speculation until Rockstar confirms it.

Release date, and the road to it

Grand Theft Auto VI launches November 19, 2026. It got there via two delays:

  • December 4, 2023 — announced alongside Trailer 1, targeting Fall 2025
  • May 2, 2025 — pushed to May 26, 2026
  • November 6, 2025 — pushed again to November 19, 2026

Digital pre-loading opens November 12. The physical version also goes on sale that day.

Platforms — and the PC question

Confirmed: PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. That’s the entire list.

There is no announced PC version. No date, no window, no confirmation that one is in development. Rockstar has historically staggered PC releases well behind console launches — GTA V arrived on PC roughly 18 months after PS3 and Xbox 360 — and Take-Two leadership has gestured at that pattern without committing to anything.

Any specific PC window you see quoted, 2027 or 2028, is invented. Treat it accordingly.

Rockstar’s site does note the game “plays best on PlayStation 5,” and Trailer 2 was captured entirely on a standard PS5. Neither of those constitutes a technical claim about performance modes, and none have been published.

Jason and Lucia

Rockstar’s premise is compact: Vice City, USA. Jason and Lucia have always known the deck is stacked against them — and when an easy score goes wrong, they find themselves in the middle of a conspiracy spanning the state of Leonida.

Jason Duval is a former U.S. Army veteran who drifted into contraband work around the Leonida Keys after his service ended. His orbit includes Cal Hampton, who monitors Coast Guard radio chatter, and Brian Heder, a regional fixer.

Lucia Caminos came to Leonida from Liberty City. Trailer 1 opens with her in Leonida Penitentiary; Trailer 2 shows her out on parole. Lucia is the first woman to headline a modern 3D-era mainline Grand Theft Auto story as a fully developed co-protagonist alongside Jason.

Surrounding them: Boobie Ike, a Vice City operator with holdings across real estate, clubs and music; Dre’Quan Priest, running Only Raw Records; Real Dimez, the recording duo of Bae-Luxe and Roxy; and Raul Bautista, a tactical bank robber.

No voice cast has been announced. Not for Jason, not for Lucia, not for anyone. Facial-matching threads pointing at specific performers are fan theories, and naming them as fact is how outlets end up issuing corrections.

Leonida

The setting is the fictional state of Leonida, Rockstar’s version of Florida — the series’ first mainline return to Vice City since 2002.

Vice City in Grand Theft Auto VI

Officially named regions so far:

  • Vice City — the coastal metropolis, modelled on Miami
  • Leonida Keys — an island chain linked by causeway, Jason’s home turf
  • Grassrivers — wetlands, airboats, Everglades analogue
  • Ambrosia — inland industrial and agricultural country
  • Mount Kalaga National Park — forested elevation and state-park infrastructure
  • Port Gellhorn — a working deep-water shipping hub
  • Leonida Penitentiary — where Lucia starts

Rockstar calls Leonida the biggest and most immersive evolution of the series so far. What it has never published is a number. There is no official square mileage, no building count, no road length. Community mapping projects that stitch trailer landmarks into coordinate grids produce plausible estimates, but they are estimates, and “twice the size of GTA V” is not a Rockstar claim.

What’s actually confirmed about gameplay

Drawn from trailers, Rockstar’s site, and the pre-order manifests — which are unusually informative, because storefront listings have to describe what you’re buying:

  • Dual protagonists, with players controlling both Jason and Lucia
  • Third-person action and gunplay
  • Armed robbery and heist scores as core structure
  • Vehicle customisation via named shops: Rideout Customs, One-Eyed Willie’s Mod Shop
  • Character customisation: Sara’s Unisex Salon, Electric Fang Tattoo Parlor, Stock 305 Clothing
  • Safehouses with personal garages for both leads
  • Land, air and sea traversal — cars, bikes, quads, aircraft, boats including the Shitzu Squalo
  • Wildlife systems — alligators, flamingos, wading birds, marine life
  • Named businesses including Only Raw Records and Boobie Ike’s club

Trailers also show an in-universe short-form video platform, complete with comment feeds and viral clips of Leonida residents behaving badly. Whether players can actually use it — record, post, build followers — has never been confirmed. It’s set dressing until Rockstar says otherwise.

One firm caution: the 2022 leak is not a source. Mechanics visible in stolen pre-alpha footage — prone stance, particular inventory wheels, specific interaction prompts — were four years and one complete production cycle away from a finished game. Citing them as features is a category error.

Price, and the box with no disc

Pre-orders opened June 25, 2026. Pricing was confirmed the day before:

  • Standard Edition — $79.99, digital or physical
  • Ultimate Edition — $99.99, digital

The Ultimate Edition adds a vehicle collection (the ’95 Grotti Cheetah, ’67 Vapid Dominator Buggy, Shitzu Squalo, a classic car set), Hawk & Little Morgan revolvers, personalised sidearms for both leads, Vice City apparel, safehouse garages, access to the customisation shops listed above, and two exclusive side missions. Its contents unlock progressively as Jason and Lucia advance rather than arriving all at once, and Standard owners can buy the upgrade at any point.

Every pre-order — either edition, placed before November 20 — includes the Vintage Vice City Pack: a ’55 Vapid Stanier, the Shore Court garage near Ocean Beach, throwback outfits and hairstyles for both protagonists, and a period weapon pattern. Digital pre-orders add a free month of GTA+.

And then the part that generated the most heat: the physical edition contains a download code, not a disc. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has defended the decision, arguing that disc releases no longer make sense for every title from either a consumer or supply-chain standpoint. It also lets boxed buyers pre-load on November 12 alongside digital owners.

Reports since June have suggested a proper disc release could follow after launch. Rockstar hasn’t confirmed one.

Multiplayer

Rockstar has described the November 19 launch as a single-player experience and has not announced an online component.

Reporting from Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier indicates a major multiplayer platform — the successor to GTA Online — is in development to follow the single-player release. That’s credible reporting, not a Rockstar announcement, and the distinction matters.

Nothing is confirmed about a launch date for it, standalone branding, or whether any GTA Online progress transfers. If you’re wondering whether your GTA$ balance survives: nobody outside Rockstar knows, and anyone telling you otherwise is guessing.

The numbers behind the hype

GTA V is the benchmark, and the benchmark is absurd. Take-Two disclosed in its Q4 FY2026 results that the game has now sold 230 million copies — second only to Minecraft. It sold roughly 11 million copies on day one and crossed $1 billion in three days, in 2013.

Take-Two does not break out revenue for individual titles, so there is no official lifetime revenue figure for GTA V. The various billion-dollar totals in circulation are third-party estimates combining game sales with more than a decade of GTA Online spending, not disclosed numbers.

For VI, Take-Two has guided to $8.0–8.2 billion in net bookings for fiscal 2027, naming the game as the primary driver. Analyst projections vary widely: Piper Sandler has modelled around 35 million copies by April 2027; DFC Intelligence has forecast 40 million in the first twelve months.

On budget: no official figure exists. The $1–2 billion range circulating online is extrapolation — analysts stacking a decade of studio overhead, engine work, performance capture, licensing and global marketing into a single number. Rockstar and Take-Two have confirmed nothing.

Rumours to ignore

Claim Reality
750 GB install size Fabricated. Rockstar has published no storage specs at all.
$100+ base game False. Standard is $79.99; $99.99 is the Ultimate tier.
Every building is enterable False. Specific interiors are confirmed; universal interiors are not a thing any engine does.
In-game cryptocurrency economy No basis. Nothing in official materials mentions it.
PC version delayed to 2028 Unfounded — there’s no announced PC version to delay.
The map includes South America Outdated. That traces to 2018 “Project Americas” rumours; the setting is Leonida.
Real-time hurricanes destroy buildings Weather systems are shown. Structural destruction is not confirmed.

What the trailers actually told us

Two official trailers exist.

Trailer 1 (December 4, 2023, 1:31) introduced Vice City, Lucia in prison, and Leonida’s social-media-poisoned public life, scored to Tom Petty’s “Love Is A Long Road” — which surged some 37,000% on Spotify afterwards.

Trailer 2 (May 6, 2025, 2:47) named the protagonists, introduced the supporting cast, and went deeper on the world. Rockstar confirmed it was captured entirely on a standard PS5 and comprised roughly equal parts gameplay and cutscene — a useful detail, because it means not every shot in it is representative of what you’ll be controlling.

The viewing figures need a scope note that most coverage skips. Trailer 2’s 475 million views in 24 hours — which Rockstar called the biggest video launch of all time, ahead of the Deadpool & Wolverine trailer’s 365 million — is an all-platforms figure. On YouTube alone it did roughly 85 million. Trailer 1’s famous 93 million was YouTube-only, because that’s the only place it existed. The two numbers measure different things and shouldn’t be compared directly.

What we still don’t know

Genuinely open questions heading into August 27:

  • PC. Whether it’s coming, and when.
  • Multiplayer. Launch timing, branding, and whether anything carries over.
  • Performance. No frame rate targets, resolution figures, or quality/performance mode details for any platform.
  • Map scale. No official measurement of any kind.
  • Radio. Not a single station or licensed track confirmed beyond trailer music.
  • Story length. No mission count, no estimated runtime.
  • Character switching. Confirmed to exist; the mechanics outside missions are unexplained.
  • Post-launch single-player content. Rockstar abandoned story DLC after GTA V. No indication either way this time.

The bottom line

Three months out, Grand Theft Auto VI is simultaneously the most-discussed and least-demonstrated game in the industry. Rockstar has shown two trailers totalling four and a half minutes, published a storefront listing, and said almost nothing else. Nearly everything circulating as “known” traces back to a pre-order manifest or a four-year-old leak.

August 27 is when that changes — or doesn’t. Netflix first, at 3 p.m. ET. Everyone else at nine.
