Kingdom of Zod Reading Order — Every Superman, Supergirl and Action Comics Chapter in Order

Kingdom of Zod is a nine-chapter Superman-family crossover running through Supergirl, Action Comics, Superman Unlimited and Superman from August through September 2026. Here’s the actual order to read it in, and which issues you can skip without losing the plot.

Where Kingdom of Zod Actually Starts

DC’s own announcement is specific about this: the crossover itself begins with Supergirl #16 on August 12, not with any earlier issue. That’s where a mysterious military coup destabilizes the Kryptonite Kingdom of El Caldero, and Supergirl assembles a strike team to investigate — the inciting incident the rest of the event builds from.

Do You Need to Read Anything First?

Useful setup, not required: Action Comics #1100 (July) closes out the preceding “Reign of the Superboys” storyline and sets up Superman’s return to the present day — a return that Action Comics #1101 picks up directly. You don’t need it to follow the Zod plot, but it explains why Superman re-enters the story the way he does in #1101.

Optional: Summer of Supergirl Special #1, a standalone anthology one-shot with stories by Sophie Campbell, Mark Waid, Gail Simone and others, celebrating Kara Zor-El across different points in her history. It isn’t part of the Kingdom of Zod plot and DC hasn’t positioned it as setup — it’s broader character context if you want it, nothing more.

Parts 1–4: The August Opening

Supergirl #16 (Sophie Campbell, Rachael Stott) kicks things off with Kara’s strike team — including Superboy-Prime, Conner Kent, Tomorrow Man and Steel — heading into occupied territory that turns out to be Kryptonian in origin. Action Comics #1101 (Joshua Williamson, Eddy Barrows), out the same day, brings Superman back into the present after Action Comics #1100. Superman Unlimited #16 (Mark Waid, Montos) and Superman #41 (Dan Slott, Joe Quinones) round out August, widening the scope as Zod’s actual plan starts to surface.

Parts 5–8: The September Chapters

September continues in the same order across the same four titles — Supergirl #17, Action Comics #1102, Superman Unlimited #17 and Superman #42 — with the same creative teams carrying each book through. DC’s original announcement didn’t pin exact dates to these four beyond “September,” so treat the sequence above as the confirmed order and expect them spread across the month ahead of the finale.

The Kingdom of Zod Finale

Superman: Kingdom of Zod Special #1 closes the event on September 30, written by all four crossover writers — Williamson, Waid, Slott and Campbell — with art by Paolo Villanelli, Bruno Frenda, David Messina and Campbell. That date comes directly from DC’s own announcement and is confirmed independently by trade coverage; treat it as the reliable one, since some early listings elsewhere have circulated conflicting September dates for this issue specifically.

Can You Read Only Superman?

No. This is a genuine cross-title crossover, not a Superman solo story with tie-ins. The plot moves through Supergirl, Action Comics, Superman Unlimited and Superman in sequence, and skipping any of the four ongoing titles means missing actual chapters of the story, not side material. If you only follow Superman, you’ll have half a story with gaps DC never intended you to read around.

Where to Start If You’re New to Superman

You don’t need years of Superman continuity to follow this. Start at Supergirl #16 and Action Comics #1101 — the crossover is written to bring readers up to speed on the moving pieces as it goes, and DC’s own solicitations don’t assume you’ve read the ongoing runs that preceded it. Reading Action Comics #1100 first helps but isn’t necessary.

Yes. Superman: Kingdom of Zod is a confirmed paperback collected edition, 368 pages, listed for February 9, 2027 at $34.99. It gathers Action Comics #1100–1102, Superman #41–42, Supergirl #16–17, Superman Unlimited #16–17, Superman Annual: Year One Thousand #1, Superman: Kingdom of Zod Special #1 and Summer of Supergirl Special #1 — meaning DC is packaging the “useful setup” and “optional” issues alongside the core nine, even though neither is required to follow the crossover itself while reading it in single issues.
