Mega Man: Dual Override Adds Playable Proto Man — How His Heat Gauge and Override System Work
Capcom confirmed Proto Man as a second playable character in Mega Man: Dual Override, launching spring 2027. Here's how his close-range combat, heat gauge and the shared Override system actually work.

Capcom confirmed Proto Man as a second playable character in Mega Man: Dual Override during a September 10, 2026 Nintendo showcase, alongside a new gameplay trailer and the game’s spring 2027 release window. Where Mega Man fights at range, Proto Man is built around close-quarters combat — and Capcom detailed exactly how his risk-reward heat gauge and the game’s shared Override system work.
The Quick Version
| Release window | Spring 2027 |
| Platforms | PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch 2, Switch, PC (Steam, Epic Games Store) |
| Playable characters | Mega Man and Proto Man |
| Mega Man’s style | Ranged firepower |
| Proto Man’s style | Close-quarters attacks |
| Proto Man’s resource | Heat gauge |
| Shared mechanic | Override system |
| Customization | Custom Chips |
| Merchandise | Mega Man and Proto Man amiibo confirmed, functionality TBA |
How Proto Man actually plays
Capcom’s own framing draws a clean line between the two heroes: Mega Man relies on ranged firepower, while Proto Man jumps into the fray with close-quarters attacks, providing a new way to charge through stages and defeat Robot Masters. Reporting on the reveal describes a powerful charge attack that doubles as an aerial dash, giving Proto Man mobility options that don’t map directly onto Mega Man’s straightforward shooting kit.
That aggression comes with a resource to manage: Proto Man’s heat gauge. Capcom’s messaging is direct that players need to “keep an eye on Proto Man’s heat gauge to stay cool in battle when harnessing his formidable arsenal of abilities” — the exact consequence of letting it max out hasn’t been detailed in Capcom’s own materials, so treat “overheating” as a real risk without assuming a specific penalty until Capcom confirms one.
The Override system’s real trade-off
Override is shared between both characters: it lets either hero “temporarily push their powers beyond their normal limits.” Capcom has been specific about the downside, too — when Override runs out, players experience a temporary loss in performance, so popping it isn’t a free power spike. It’s a timing decision, not just a damage button.

Custom Chips let you build a playstyle
Both characters can be personalized through the new Custom Chip system, which Capcom describes as letting players “equip a variety of upgrades to build playstyles that are uniquely their own.” Confirmed examples include rapid-fire, a protective shield bubble, and a hover option — enhancements that layer onto each character’s base kit rather than replacing it.

Platforms and release window
Dual Override is confirmed for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, launching in spring 2027. Capcom hasn’t announced an exact release date or price. A playable demo is planned for Tokyo Game Show 2026, though Capcom hadn’t specified whether Proto Man will be playable on the show floor as of this reveal.
What’s still unannounced
Capcom has not confirmed DLC plans, performance targets like 60fps or 4K support, the full Robot Master roster, or what the Mega Man and Proto Man amiibo actually do in-game — Capcom’s own statement says only that “more information about the figures’ functionality and release timing will be shared at a later date.” An exact release date and price also remain unconfirmed.
