PHYSINT Moves From PlayStation to Xbox — What Kojima Actually Confirmed About the Publishing Switch
PlayStation Studios has stepped away from Hideo Kojima's PHYSINT, and Xbox is now publishing it. Here's the confirmed timeline, and why exclusivity, IP ownership and platforms are still unconfirmed.

Hideo Kojima’s action-espionage project PHYSINT has a new publisher. PlayStation Studios has stepped away from the game, and Xbox is now publishing it through an expanded partnership with Kojima Productions — but PHYSINT itself hasn’t been cancelled, and several of the biggest follow-up questions remain genuinely unanswered.
What Actually Happened
PlayStation’s own statement is direct: “After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to step away from collaborating with Kojima Productions on its project PHYSINT.” Kojima’s account of how that unfolded is more specific. His statement: “In mid-June of this year, we unexpectedly received notice from PlayStation Studios that they would cancel the PHYSINT project.” From there, Kojima says his studio “spent the last three months searching tirelessly for a new partner” before landing on Xbox.
That’s a real distinction worth holding onto: PlayStation’s notice in June was, in Kojima’s telling, a cancellation of PlayStation’s involvement — not a statement that killed the game outright. Kojima Productions kept developing and kept looking, and PHYSINT is still described as in development today.
From Sony’s Third Kojima Project to Xbox’s Newest
PHYSINT was announced January 31, 2024 during a State of Play, with then-PlayStation Studios head Hermen Hulst appearing alongside Kojima. At the time, it was published by Sony Interactive Entertainment — the third project born out of the Sony/Kojima Productions relationship, and the second original IP after Death Stranding. Production on PHYSINT was slated to begin following Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, which released in 2025.
Xbox’s own announcement keeps its language about the new arrangement fairly simple. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma: “Creators have choices about where and how they bring their ideas to life. We’re honored that Kojima-san has chosen Xbox.” Kojima’s statement on the Xbox side: “This expands our relationship with Xbox beyond OD. As we move forward with the development of PHYSINT, we remain committed to redefining the action-espionage genre.”
Is PHYSINT Now an Xbox Exclusive?
Not confirmed. Xbox is publishing the game, and Xbox is the party announcing the news — but neither Xbox’s own release nor Kojima Productions’ statements specify a platform lineup, and nothing in the announcement uses the word “exclusive.” An eventual Xbox release is the obvious expectation given who’s now publishing it, but PC availability, a future PlayStation release, or any other platform haven’t been ruled in or out. Treat platform questions as open until Microsoft or Kojima Productions actually answers them.
What About IP Ownership?
Also not addressed. Neither company’s statement discusses who owns the PHYSINT intellectual property going forward, whether Sony retains any rights tied to its original involvement, or how the deal is structured. This guide isn’t going to guess at contract terms neither party has disclosed.
PHYSINT and OD Are Different Games, Same Studio Relationship
Kojima’s own wording — “this expands our relationship with Xbox beyond OD” — makes clear PHYSINT and OD aren’t connected stories or the same project. OD is a horror game Kojima Productions has been developing with Xbox Game Studios since 2022, made with filmmaker Jordan Peele and starring Sophia Lillis, Hunter Schafer and the late Udo Kier. PHYSINT is the separate, previously PlayStation-attached action-espionage project. What’s changed is that Xbox’s relationship with Kojima Productions now covers both, rather than PHYSINT sitting with a different publisher entirely.
A Film and TV Partnership, Not a Confirmed PHYSINT Adaptation
Xbox and Kojima Productions also announced their relationship extends into film and television — collaborating, in their words, “to bring new stories to broader audiences.” That’s a broader studio-to-studio commitment, not an announced PHYSINT movie or show. No specific adaptation has been named, so don’t read this as PHYSINT’s screen adaptation being confirmed.

What’s Still Unknown
Xbox and Kojima Productions haven’t announced PHYSINT’s platforms, given it a release date, clarified IP ownership terms, or detailed what — if anything — changes in the game’s design or scope now that it has a new publisher. Today’s news is about who’s backing the project and roughly how it got here, not what the finished game will look like.
